Do you have any special plans for while your boyfriend is in town? We just got back from seeing Narnia and are heading out to meet some of my hs friends at a Tibetan restaurant.
One day this week we are going to see an exhibit of Hans Memling's portraits at the Frick, which is one of my favorite museums.
And then we might go see the tree at the Met.
We're also going to LA for a week starting on the 30th. It will be my first time out of NYC for New Year's Eve!
What has been in heavy rotation on your iTunes recently? Some silly Christmas stuff - "Christmas Wrapping" by the Waitresses, "Just Like Christmas" by Low and "2000 Miles" by the Pretenders. Other than that I've been on a X-Ray Spex kick (British punk band from the 70s). And of course our favorite --Mirah!
What band or artist from the past would you love to see live? I guess this is kind of an obvious answer but I would probably say Nirvana. I was only just starting to go to concerts in the city when Kurt Cobain died so I never had a chance to see them. There are lots of smaller bands that I regret not seeing and older artists that are still alive and kicking which would have been fun to see in their prime (David Bowie, the Rolling Stones).
is your bf from france? He's American (well, Romanian by birth) but he's been doing a fellowship in France since February and is going to be living there until August I think.
what is your favorite area of France/tell me about your favorite travels in Europe (i have some serious wanderlust right now! ) I actually hadn't been to France until I went to visit my bf early in the summer. I liked Paris a lot although not nearly as much as some other cities (like Rome or Venice). The city my bf lives in, Tours, is really nice and I love the old medieval section where his apartment is. It's also right on the Loire River and there is an island in the middle with a really nice park on it. In October we took a day trip to Poitiers and that was gorgeous.
This is the street my bf lives on
The cathedral in Tours

I actually didn't leave the country until I was a senior in college but I have been making up for lost time. I've gone to Italy 4 times and I hope to keep going back on a semi-regular basis. I absolutely love Venice and it kind of breaks my heart that I haven't been there in a long time.
you take great pictures, from what I remember. Where did you learn? Have you always been interested in photography?
You are a librarian, right? What is the coolest library you've been to? What's your favorite section of the library (from the Dewey Decimal System, of course).

what is your favorite area of brooklyn and why? These days I mainly just hang out in Williamsburg because there are tons of shows there but when I was in college my then-bf and I used to explore Brooklyn a lot. I suppose I like Williamsburg just because there is a lot going on there at night and it's so close to Manhattan but I don't really like it aesthetically and I really dislike the fact that there's only 1 subway option. Of course I love Brooklyn Heights because the houses are gorgeous and there is the promenade and it's close to Manhattan. And I haven't been there in years but I really like the Vinegar Hill/Navy Yards area. Vinegar Hill
where would you live if you could live anywhere in brooklyn? in nyc? in the world? In Brooklyn I'm tempted to say I'd want to live in Vinegar Hill or DUMBO but in terms of convenience I'd choose Brooklyn Heights.
It's really hard for me to choose one neighborhood in all of NYC. I think about this a lot and can never make up my mind. I love the Upper East Side, which is actually where I live now, but of course I'd love to live somewhere between 5th and Park in a fabulous building or townhouse. At this point in my life I'd probably choose to live somewhere downtown like the East Village since that is where I spend most of my time although there are a lot of things which would drive me nuts - like the constant noise from bars and the explosion of NYU.
If I could live anywhere in the world I'd probably stick with NYC (even though I hate the weather!) but I would also love to live in Europe for a while. I mentioned before that I love Venice and I think it would be amazing to live there although I don't know if I'd like dealing with the constant floods.
you take great pictures, from what I remember. Where did you learn? Have you always been interested in photography? Thank you! I actually did take photography in high school and did try to continue on with it in college but I never felt like I was especially good so I gave up on using fancy cameras and making my own prints and switched to point-and-shoot and digital cameras. I'm not especially interested in photography as an art form but I did study art history in college and I think that helped train my eyes in terms of composition.
You are a librarian, right? What is the coolest library you've been to? Yep, I'm a librarian. The coolest library I've been to might be the library at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn (where I got my MLS). It was designed by Tiffany and has glass floors. I also love the Laurentian Library in Florence, which was designed by Michelangelo. The reading room is pretty cool but it's the massive staircase leading to the library which is really amazing - it basically takes up the entire entry hall.
The coolest library I have not yet been to is the public library in Seattle. I hope to get there soon!
What's your favorite section of the library (from the Dewey Decimal System, of course).
I actually cheated and looked this up. I was sooo bad at cataloging although in my defense most colleges don't use the DDS so I spent most of my hardcore research years using the Library of Congress cataloging system.
My favorite sections are: 722 Architecture to ca. 300. This covers ancient Roman architecture.
759 Historical, geographic, persons treatment. Apparently this is where they stick Netherlandish art and I would imagine most art history. You can see why bigger research libraries don't use Dewey Decimal.
what's you favorite band to see live? I really like seeing my friends' band just because I always know tons of people at those shows and it's a good way for me to see friends that I don't see normally.
Bands that I like to see mainly because they put on good spectacles are Gil Mantera's Party Dream and Kids on TV. I also really like this band Turing Machine. I don't listen to their albums very much but I always get really wired after seeing them play.
what's your favorite place in the city? Probably Museum Mile because it's beautiful and I love museums plus I went to high school in that area so I have a sentimental attachment to that area.
is there a place in they city that you haven't been to yet and you'd love to see? Tons and tons of places. Like lots of native NYers I have never done things that most tourists have done - like the top of the Empire State Building, Ellis Island. I would love to go on the High Line, the abandoned elevated train track on the West Side, before they turn it into a park. I've never been to St. John the Divine and I really should go see that.
what's your favorite nyc memory? This is tough because almost all of my memories are NYC memories! Instead I'll say that one of my favorite NYC experiences is coming over one of the bridges from Queens at night, especially if I'm coming from the airport. The skyline always looks so beautiful and it makes me happy to live here.
what's your favorite memory in general? Again, really tough. One memory that stands out is when I arrived in Venice for the first time. It was my first trip alone and I scared to death but taking the water bus from the airport to San Marco was one of the most amazing experiences.
What is your heritage? I'm Irish and German - about half-and-half on both sides. My sister and I always joke that we're adopted though because 1. people never think we're related and 2. people always think we're Eastern European. I've actually had Russian and Polish people ask me for directions on the subway.
What is your favorite thing to cook, and the recipe? I'm much better at baking than cooking although sadly since I live alone I don't have much reason or opportunity to bake. I really like making frittatas, especially because you don't really need a recipe.
One thing which I love to make is these things that are like Italian crepes. The recipe is basically just flour and enough water to get the consistency of cream plus a pinch of salt. Then you pour a really thin layer into the pan and cook them like crepes. When they are still hot you sprinkle freshly shredded parmesan on them and fold them into little triangles. It's so simple but if you have good quality cheese they are really delicious.
How do you usually spend your weekends? I used to do a lot more museum going and movie watching but lately I've been getting lazy. I usually wind up cleaning since I don't do much of it during the week. During the day I often go shopping and run errands. If it's nice weather I go for a walk or sit on the East River promenade and read. At night I usually go to see a band or meet up with friends at a bar.
What do you do for a living and do you enjoy it? I'm a reference librarian at a law firm. I'm not especially interested in corporate law but I love doing research and I like the fact that I get asked different questions all the time. I also like the fact that I can work fairly independently and it's rare that I have any long-term requests so I can pretty much do my own thing and go on vacation whenever I want.
What is your favorite magazine? The New Yorker, hands down. I like to look at the pictures in fashion magazines but they don't really hold my attention. The articles in the NYer are always really interesting and it's nice to be able to read something informative but short. I also like to read Vanity Fair for the Old Hollywood stories.
Christmas lights: white, colored, or bubble? Definitely white. I don't have a Christmas tree since I live alone and my apartment is small but I do have white lights in my windows!
What's your favorite thing to do on weekends? I like to wake up early on Saturday and chat on IM with my bf (during the week we normally just email each other) and watch 90210 reruns. Then if I'm not being lazy I like to walk around my neighborhood and go to a museum or do window shopping. I also like going to hang out at my sister's apartment. She doesn't have a tv so we just listen to music and dance and get take out.
What's your favorite item of clothing? For winter it's probably this LAMB sweater which I have in both black and white. I'm normally not so into celeb designers but this sweater is so adorable and really well made.
I also adore my Prada skirt, though I rarely get to wear it.
Really I love so many of my clothes that it's really difficult for me to get rid of stuff!
How long have you and your bf been together? Only about 8 months. It's hard to even count it as a full 8 months though since we live in different countries and have only had 5 visits with each other since we started going out.
You like museums a lot. It was Henri Rousseau's "The Dream" that made me fall in love with art at the age of eleven. Is there a pc of art or architecture that has "spoken to you"?
You like museums a lot. It was Henri Rousseau's "The Dream" that made me fall in love with art at the age of eleven. Is there a pc of art or architecture that has "spoken to you"? Tons and tons. It was modern/abstract art which first lured me in to the world of art history simply because I wanted to understand it better but in college I got much more interested in classical architecture and Northern Renaissance art.
This painting inspired me to write my thesis. We briefly studied it in a Netherlandish art survey I took my junior year of college and even though it was not my favorite painting it always stayed with me and intrigued me because it's really odd.
