I already posted this in the eBay section, but I thought it would get more traffic here...
ARGH. I'm so freaking mad right now. I sold a pair of boots on eBay for a nice little profit, and RIGHT after the auction ends, the winner emailed me and told me he bought the boots at cost elsewhere, and will honor the bid, but would like to back out if I can sell the boots to someone else. I don't want to relist them. I can do a second chance offer to the next highest bidder, but if they turn it down, should I just make the guy buy them? What would you do? Ask the winner to pay the difference if the next highest bidder buys them?
I'm so irritated right now!
ETA: I just tried to send out a second chance offer, and the only bidders that signed up for it bid less than half what this dude won them for. He won them for $255, and the second chance bids were $125 and under.
Isn't it an option to tell the winner that yes, you need him to honor the bid? He had said he "would like to back out" -- well, these are just the rules of eBay, and you shouldn't have to bend over backwards or lose money because someone would prefer not to play by those rules, right??
I agree with Christine he needs to honor the bid. He should have not bought the boots somewhere else knowing he was bidding on them and might have a chance to win them.
True. I guess I'm too nice sometimes. He just wrote me back and said he'd pay the difference. I could do a 3 day auction, and who knows... maybe get more and have him pay the listing fees, OR, just hold him to it and make him pay. ARGH! I should just make him pay. But it's Christmas!
Thanks. I told him I need him to honor his bid. I just don't want to deal with relisting. What does worry me, though, is that he is a new member (zero bids), so we'll see if he really pays up. I'll let you know.

Good for you, you did the right thing. If people don't understand that their winning bid is actually a contract, they really shouldn't be playing around on ebay anyway!
Now you just got to hope he doesn't do a chargeback. This all seems a little suspicious to me. If he doesn't have a confirmed address through paypal you basically will be screwed if he does a chargeback. I only send things to confirmed addresses with delivery confirmation so you have proof you sent and they received.
