Dude, EVERYONE registers at Target! Nothing to be embarassed about in the least IMO, and the guests will likely appreciate some more affordable options. The other stores they're registered at are very expensive-o!

FWIW, we're registering at Target, BB&B, Pier One, and The Great Indoors.

i told her i though that some stuff was pricey and she thought that maybe a group of people would get together and get her the big items.

Absolutely okay to put expensive stuff on there for group gifts. And, most if not all give couples a 10%-20% off 'completion coupon' - good on everything that wasn't bought off your registry, and doesn't expire until a year after the wedding usually.

We're actually going to register at Best Buy (for a huge TV, appliances, etc) and not tell anyone, just so we can use the completion coupon when we buy the stuff ourselves !

Oh, and you might also tell her not to put everything on the registries right away - it's better to put the stuff you really need/want on first, and then check the registry and add other 'would like to have' stuff as the wedding gets closer and the pickins' start to look a little slim. Otherwise you could end up with tons of the 'would like to have' items, and few or none of the 'need' items.

I would personally rather be able to go get an item in my price range rather than get a group together to purchase a big item, unless I was hostess of a shower or something. I think she needs to go lower range because it's better for her guests! I am all about making it easier for others. Not to mention that you need less expensive gifts for people that are going to more than one event & will get you several presents, ya know? And the very idea that people would make fun irritates the crap out of me. Those people can go to the high $$ places & get the expensive stuff for her. The reality is, she probably needs more practical stuff like a toaster & a cheese grater more than a cappachino machine or something!

laken, she does have inexpensive stuff on her registry, i just didn't think it was okay to put a 3000.00 bed on the registry.

I agree with Laken.. She should definately make sure there are plenty of low-mid priced items on her registry. (I'm glad you confirmed that she does)

What if a wife of a co-worker goes to her shower and doesn't know anyone else? She would not be able to share a gift because she might not know another person there!

The comment about people making fun of her is irritating. Target is a great store. There are many high quality items there.. and as a Target customer, her comment offends me! Would she laugh at me because I registered at Target?

That said.. a 3K bed is a little outrageous even if she has a lot of wealthy/generous relatives.. I might be uncomfortable at her shower or wedding.. knowing that she expects such obscenely expensive things from her guests. $3000 split up 15 ways is still $200 per person!

One of my friends is kind of a snob and only registered at high-end places (Tiffany's and Williams-Sonoma), and the end result was that hardly anyone bought anything from her registry. Afterwards, she confessed she should have registered for things in a wider price range, because she ended up with a bunch of random stuff from random stores.

I am getting ready to register and I was told that at places like Macy's they have a list that breaks it down for you on how many items you should register for in a certain price range depending on your amount of guests invited.

we registered at Crate and Barrell --- household and entertaining stuff

Williams Sonoma--toasters, pie plates, kitchen and cooking stuff, kitchen towels and Riedel stemwear

and Belk's- a department store for china, silver, towels, sheets, a few knives

guests really stuck to our registery and i was so pleased. I tried to stick to classic useful items but I am just a practical person. I wanted everything I registered for to be things I wouldn't buy for myself and things that would last. But I think these days you can register for anything==people do victorias secret, jcpenny, tiffanys, target, home depot, lowes

We registered super early (April 2005) at Bloomingdales, Bed Bath and Beyond, Fortunoffs and Crate & Barell. I am registered for 3 sets of dishes - meat, dairy, and fine china. So far I have my meat and 12/24 of my fine china.

At bed bath and beyond and C&B I did lower price point options. I am also triple registered for my china because I am asking for 24 place settings. - Yes I know that is a lot but I love to entertain as does my mom and she can never use her fine china because she only has 12 placesettings and they discontinued (she ended up buying 30 placesettings of Mikasa Italian Countryside to use when entertaining). For our good flatware I registered multiple times as well and for individual placesettings as well as sets allowing people to choose what they want to get me.

It depends also on how much - we got several engagement gifts, my parents through us an engagement party, and I am probably having at least one shower so that is a lot of gift giving, but the other thing is everything K and I have is all hand-me downs and I want us to start our marriage with everything new - its just the way I am.

I think furniture is a bit much - I think people would just rather write a check instead.

tell her to register for gift cards, and then use those towards the bed.. right before the wedding they could add expensive furniture to the registry, assuming most people will have purchased presents already and won't look, and then after the wedding they can use the gift cards to buy the furniture, also taking advantage of the discount given for registry gifts.

Everyone and their fourth cousin registers at Target...I would have never know what to buy one of my friends if I didn't take a chance to guess that she was registered at Target! So ppoh on all the people who make fun of Target! I Tar-jay!

tara_t: I think if I was in your friend's situation that I would register at Target and/or a department store in addition to Pottery Barn/Williams-Sonoma so that way you'd have a varied price range for everything.

okay, she did pottery barn (bed included), williams sonoma, and target.

she's still feeling weird about that one.

i really don't get her. she wears clothes from target and is a target junkie in general, but she still is embarrassed to tell people that's where she's registered.

she always has been a bit of a strange bird.

see, i have a different perspective. my bf had a lot of friends get married this summer, which meant that he was in charge of purchasing the items. well, since he was in charge, often he wouldn't find out until later where they even registered. so that means when he did find out and sat down to buy the items, there were slim pickings. granted it was our fault, but i know that when i purchase a gift, i always want to buy one nice thing. well, when we got to the target registry there was random stuff like four plasic cups for $20. a bbq set for $20. then there was all the board games, and remote controllers (which we all know how i feel about those ). so it was kinda annoying because they didn't register for enough big items (i'm talking $50-$200 not $3,000) and had a ton of little items.

i wouldn't register for little items just for the sake of registering for them. i think those items can be bought with gcs after the wedding. that's just my two cents.
