Hairstyles for a Semi-Formal Party

I need ideas for hairstyles - I am going to a semi-formal holiday party this weekend. I have long hair (about 2 inches above my waist) its naturally silky and straight. I have it cut in a U shape with layers at the bottom. Normally I just let it hang loose.
Could you suggest some simple updos or hairstyles for my hair type? I'd like to try something new. I know from previous experience that its so silky that I will have to be very careful about the products I use and the pinning it and tying it up so that it stays put all evening. If you have links to step by step instructions I would really love that!

I have very long hair, too, and I would wear it up in a loose chignon/French twist - not too smooth, with a few little loose pieces etc. Unfortunately, I totally suck at doing my own hair and if I need it to look right I just go to the salon and pay them to do it properly rather than screw it up and frustrate myself (my hair is the same as yours - slippery and does NOT wanna stay put), so I don't have instructions.
