Buying Clothes from eBay
Permalink Closed

You ladies who do this - how do you know the items will fit? Do you go strictly by the measurements? Or have you tried on the clothes in store (like at Anthro) and know what size / shape works for you?

I have a hard time with clothes fitting right - I'm between a 4, 6, or 8 in a skirt, depending, a 6 or 8 in pants, and a M or L in tops, depending on the cut (usu. a size 8 in a top). I'm normally an 8 in dresses, but I know that DVF fits me in a 10 instead...but I don't always know if something on eBay will work for me. I was lusting after the Sugarelly skirt from Anthro on eBay, but then tried it on in-store and it was awful on me.

I don't list stuff on eBay so would probably be stuck with something if it didn't work out. But I know a lot of you buy from auctions. Any tricks or tips?

well, when i do this i do accept the possibility that it won't fit. I have had great luck though. I do measure clothes that fit me well & compare measurements. I bet if you measure the 4, 6, 8, in those different clothes that you'll see that the measurements are pretty close. For tops I focus on the armpit to armpit measurement to make sure it will fit over my boobs becasue that's where I have problems. I usually only buy pants that I've tried on in the store because I am terribly hard to fit, but i have just guessed or sized up on items i wasn't sure of & it worked out.

Also, I usually buy items that have lots of bids on them because to me that shows that if it doesn't fit, it will sell back on ebay for a pretty good price because other people are after it as well. I've even gone so far as to look at the bidding history & email the losing bidder that I see they lost this item to me & I am relisting in case they are interested. I'm not sure if that's against the rules but it hasn't caused me a problem yet.

I buy tons of clothes on ebay and I also have a hard time getting clothes to fit (mainly because I'm smaller than the smallest size in a lot of chain stores). Like laken, I buy tops based on the measurements and usually only buy pants or skirts if I have tried them on or am reasonably confident that the sizing of that brand is consistent. If I happen to find a skirt or dress that I love I try to figure out if it could be altered. If it's something that is expensive I think about whether I could relist it and make my money back, either by seeing how many people are bidding on it or by looking at completed auctions. HTH!
