I experimented today and made this..it is SOO good!

Take a portobello mushroom and brush it with olive oil or Italian dressing. Cover both sides. Then broil it for a couple of minutes on each side. Then add pizza sauce or spaghetti sauce and shredded cheese on top and broil for another couple of minutes until cheese is melted. It's a very easy recipe that is fairly healthy and tastes really good!!

Sounds delicious! I'm going to have to try that too.

This is going to sound really dumb, so please forgive me, but I have a question--When a recipe says to broil something, what does that mean exactly?  Does it mean to put it in the oven and if so, on what temperature??  Sorry, I am pretty new to cooking and still trying to teach myself the basics.  This is something that I've wondered about before but was too shy to ask!

didn't your teachers every tell you that there are no dumb questions? (although I think jessica simpson has squished that myth for me) ANYWAY!

My oven has a "broiler" setting - it's basically the highest temp on your oven - it's about 500 degrees i think? if you put your broiler on you have to watch it really closely because it will burn pretty quickly (bread & such, i've never done portabellos this way)
HTH.

Yeah, your oven should have a broil setting.  It heats the food from the top, so you can get really melty, gooey cheese when you use the broiler and you can make things turn a really good golden brown too, if you use it correctly (meaning keeping your eye on it).  It can turn from good to bad REALLY quickly.
