FLU....Doctor's Note...
Permalink Closed

so i was supposed to work at the store today, but i have the flu. i called and told them that i was sick, i have the flu.  i even called three people to try to get it covered.  i have to have it covered since there has to be two people there.

the one manager was being soooo ridiculously unaccomadating.  i asked for the DM's number so explain that i was sick, tried to get it covered, and that i don't think i should be written up for it.  she said that i was being ridiculous and she wouldn't give me the number.

i called the store manager who was not working, in tears, saying that i was sick and i am trying to get it covered.  she said she would make some calls and call me back.  so...she calls me back and says that i need a doctor's note.

WTF!!  i'm in healthcare, and i would get laughed out of the office if i went in to get a note for the flu!  i'm done with this job, was going to quit soon, i just wanted to have EVERYTHING lined up with the laser hair removal place before i started.

soo, here's my questions.  i don't want to burn bridges, but i've had it at this point.  so i feel like not showing up.  the problem is, that i won't get paid if i just stop showing up, and payday is friday (i have $150 worth of bonuses plus regular pay approx. $300).

i have a short shift on thursday and friday.  so on thursday i can show up with a dr's note (i really don't want to stoop to their level...i'm not in h.s.).  work, and then get paid on friday, not show up friday (i have direct deposit).

i can show up with a dr's note on thursday, and put my two weeks in, but then i would have to work.

i just think it's ridiculous that i have to have a doctor's note, so if i don't show up with one, i will get fired, so i will get paid, but i will have on my record that i was fired (i've never been fired before).

what should i do?  i don't want to eat my paycheck, i don't want to show up with a dr's note, i don't want to burn bridges,  and i don't want to work for two more weeks (i only work 1-2 days a week).

i'm so annoyed, but i'm sick, so i'm not sure i'm thinking correctly.

I think I'd show up on Thursday, with a Dr.'s note and quit. You've proven you were sick and you've also showed them you won't put up with being treated like crap.

Did you go to the Dr.? Maybe you could just show a receipt from your payment?

In you defense I have to say that mandatory doctor's notes are just ridiculous. It's outrageous and I'd be pissed as hell.

If they would fire you for something so ridiculous, I really don't think you should worry about the 'getting fired' part of it all.  If you have a friend that works there that is on your side, use them as your reference for that place - just call them a colleague.

I got fired once - it was a really weird place that fired people once they'd been there awhile so they wouldn't have to give them raises or vacation time or seniority.  I had a friend who worked above me at that company (who also got fired ironically) that I used as my reference so I wouldn't have to either refuse to give a reference for that job or give someone would make up untrue crap.  Worked well.  I also explained their policy on hiring new instead of promoting old in interviews (if it came up), which all interviewers thought was weird too so it never worked against me.  If anything it worked in my favor IMO.

Good luck and feel better!

at my work we have to have dr's notes if we miss more than 2 days of work in a row, and my response is always "if you want to pay for the doctor's visit, i'll be more than happy to provide you with a note."

as a side note, does being fired really go on your "record"? i know in some states the employer is not allowed to say you were fired if asked. i would just leave them off your resume and forget about it.

no i didn't go to the effing dr.  you don't go to the doctor for the flu.  especially not if you're a nurse!!  you get some rest and deal with it.  i'm so annoyed, i can't even tell you.  i want to give the dm and regional manager a piece of my mind about my manager before i go just so they know what she's really like.

i love how she played the, "it's policy" card.  everyone has been sick there and not ONE person had to bring in a doctor's note.  i think they just hate that i have a real career, that i can afford to do this for fun, that i am not a "YES" girl, and i will question things.

i just need some outside perspective since i'm soo steamed and sick.

Wow.  That sucks!  I can't believe they're just telling you now that you need a dr.'s note if you're going to call in sick.  Ridiculous.

It seems to me like the lesser evil of all your options is to just get a Dr.'s note.  That way you don't get fired, you still get paid, and you don't burn your bridges.  I'm pretty sure most doctors would understand that you're going in just to get a note and not think you're being ridiculous.

Is there any possible way that you could make it in to work today?  I'm thinking if you feel at all capable of doing it, you could go in, appear like you're trying to stick it out, and then end up going home early.  If you can't, I wouldn't worry about it too much, but I'd try to get a doctor's note.

Anyway, hope you feel better!  It's no fun to have the flu.

Get the doctor's note. Get your paycheck. Give them two weeks notice. And ask them not to put you on the schedule. The doctor's note is not a hill worth dying on, given the ramifications of having to explain you were fired on every job application for the rest of your freaking life. You dont' want to forfeit your paycheck. And you can tell HR that you would be willing to forgo being paid for unused vacation days (assuming you have them) if you don't have to work the next two weeks - so in effect you take your vacation days in the last two weeks. I'm not sure this is actually legal, it's just a deal I've seen worked out before.

PS - NCshopper's idea of going into work is definitely going to make you look better, if you can manage, and they probably won't make you stay. It's just easier to believe someone's really sick if you see it with your own eyes, and too tempting to be like "yeah, right" if you don't, for most managers.

ew.

I'd go in, throw up all over the place, and leave.

Is it legal for them to not pay you for the time you worked? That seems weird...

i would love to do that, but i think they would make me stay since there has to be two people there.

i think they can not pay you, if you just stop showing up.  i feel like i read that somewhere.

my bf wants me to write my termination note and he said he will go in there (they've never met him), act like he's going to drop a ton of money for his gf (they will have their panties up in a bunch at that notion), make them run around grabbing sizes, tear up the store at 6:30 when it closes at 7, and when they get to the register with all the clothes, say, "whoops, i forgot my wallet, but i have this..." and hand them my termination letter.

too bad that i believe in karma.
