X-mas gift help needed asap!

Ladies, my parents do everything for me and I really wanted to buy them TiVo or comcast DVR for Christmas since they record like, 10 shows a week and are always hunting for the tapes, taping over stuff, etc.

Wellllllllll, TiVo is very expensive for me, like 199.99 for the box then 12.95 a month. Which is about 356. There is a 150 rebate but then it's still 206 and I would need the 356 plus tax upfront before I get the rebate.

Now, there is the comcast DVR and the box is FREE! YAY...and the monthly charge is only 9.95. But, they need my parents consent before I buy it for their account and they cannot do a separate bill. They also do not offer giftcards so I'm shit outta luck for that. I don't want to just give them cash for it because they pay for everything for me and I already owe them so much so I think it would be tacky to say "Here's a wad of cash, even though I owe you for about a billion things, buy dvr with it." You know?

So what do? Do I just spend the extra $ and buy TiVo? I want the comcast but I don't know how to do it....And I don't have backup presents...just little ideas. Ugh-2 weeks before Christmas. Please help me girls-I'm stressing and it's finals week too! TIA

Hey Jen.  is there anyway you can prepay for the comcast service when you set it up so it doesn't really get billed to your parents? I'm not sure how it all works but maybe you could pay the $120 upfront for the service and they can deduct it from the bill for them.

I don't know much about these things but it sounds like comcast would be the better option for you so maybe you can go with it.

Have you tried googling TIVO to see if you can find the receiver online for cheaper?  I was able to find somethings at a discount that way.

I'd do the Comcast. It sucks to have to ruin the surprise but since money is an issue (it would be for me anyway), I'd go with the less expensive one. Maybe you can give them a little something small to open on actual Christmas to go with it - a universal remote, a subscription to TV Guide, whatever.

Have fun!

But if you really want to go with Tivo, they have current prices on www.cnet.com that will tell you the cheapest place to buy it online. HTHs!

Is there any way you can sneak the account # from your parents, call comcast and "update" them with your phone # and address for only billing, pretend to be your mom to give consent, and then just tell your parents at Christmas that you had it set up at their house but the bills are coming to you?  Sounds complicated, but it might work?

jen, not sure if it's too late, but you can get a 40-hr tivo (which is plenty in my opinion) for $169.99, so after the $150 rebate, it's only $19.99. i know you'd still have to pay the $169 and only get the money back later, but that's probably the best deal for a tivo that you'll find.

also, i think that you don't have to pay the 12.95 monthly fee up front - you can have that amount deducted from your bank account or credit card each month (i might be wrong about this - we used to have regular tivo and pay for this each month that way, but we've had direct tv tivo for the last couple of years and that works differently).
