Need advice re cancelling an auction
Permalink Closed

I listed a pair of never-worn Tiffany earrings on ebay earlier this week. My mom gave them to me as a present - perhaps last year but possibly even the year before - and I decided I wanted to exchange them. When I looked at the receipt I realized my mom had purchased them 3 months earlier and the receipt said they only took returns back within 30 days so I assumed that the policy applied to both refunds and exchanges. Well shopgirl just told me that she took something back to Tiffany that had been bought a year ago and since it was brand new and in the box they took it back and gave her a credit. The earrings cost $195 and they will probably sell on ebay for maybe between $70. There are already 5 bids and there are 5 days left on the auction.

Should I just cancel the auction and go get a credit at Tiffany? Or will that mess up my Ebay standing? Right now I have 111 positive feedback ratings. I've never withdrawn an item before and it seems like such a bad thing to do! I did read some of the Ebay help pages and they make it seem like it won't negatively affect one's standing though. I guess I could use the $70 but a $195 credit at Tiffany seems a lot better.

I don't think cancelling an auction early has any effect on your ebay standing.  I forget where to do it, but the option is somewhere either on the listing or on your ebay page.  Oh, and I would totally end them early and go to Tiffany's (maybe call them or take the earrings in first, just to be sure before you end the auction).

I've cancelled auctions early before and it has absolutely no bearing on your account or feedback. Here's what I would do. Take the earrings to Tiffany's ASAP and see if they will return them or not. If they won't then you have no reason to cancel. But if they do, you can go right home and cancel the auction!
