As many of you know, I've been struggling to figure out what I want to do job-wise for some time now. My DH told me I didn't HAVE to work, but I could use some extra $$ & want something to do. I took an incredibly part time gig (3 days a month!) & am mystery shopping, but other than that haven't really found anything that fits.

Today one of my DH's friends called me - he just bought a company & will be running it out of his house. Basically he needs someone part time that he can forward the phone to & he called to see if I wanted to do it. It's actually exactly what I want, i can stay in my jammies, clean my house, stay home, no gas, no work clothes, etc & get paid. Yes, the phone does ring & I have to schedule people, etc, but it seems pretty laid back & flexible for me. Admittedly, we will both be in transition & will have to figure out how many hours, etc etc.

Here is my question: he & my hubby have kind of been talking about that yes i want to do this (with my blessing) & today he called to make sure i understood what he wanted / needed, hours, make sure i was interested, etc etc. But we never did talk about money. Now, I realize that it's answering the dang phone & it's not going to be lots of money - and I don't "NEED" the money, i mean I do, but I don't have to have it to pay the bills, ya know? It's bound to come up & soon - so how much do I ask for? I get paid $10 an hour for my other part time menial labor job - is that fair? At my last corporate job I was pretty highly paid, so to be honest I don't know what is good & bad for this job. Thoughts?

Questions!

  1. Is the pay under the table or taxed?

  2. Hours/Days? (I know you already said you were going to talk about this, but if it were me it would factor in heavily.  Basically because all the hours your 'on' you won't be able to physically leave the house, right?

$10 an hour is very fair IMO.  It's what I made at first as a receptionist, but part of that had to be spent on gas, work clothes, lunches, etc which are expenses you won't have.  Just for fun, I would run some numbers and figure out how much you'd be spending on commuting, work clothing, and lunches per month if you were working outside the home, then add that number to what you'd be making working from home to see how much you'd have to make to have the same 'take home' income, does that make sense?

I think $10 an hour is pretty reasonable to ask for.  My only hesitation with this is that it is a friend of your husband and do you really want to be bound to your house every day at certain times.

lsu, yeah, I've thought through the whole friend thing - I know him & like him - he is very responsible & would actually rather work with someone I know that someone I don't at this point.
And as far as being confined to my home, we talked today about setting up a schedule so it will be consistent. I figure that's really no different than being confined to an office, only I can stay in my jammies, not use gas, and play with my kitties. But that's the kind of feedback I need - to make sure I've thought of everything.

and yes L, that makes perfect sense. It will be taxed, although depending on how many hours I work that may become an issue at some point - if we get pushed into the next tax bracket we would end up losing money. I'll put pen to paper, but in the meantime I found out that the people he bought from are paying their girl $9/hr so we are definately in the same range. Not much. But HEY, it's shoe money!

i think it sounds perfect--is he going to write up a little agreement that you both will sign? i think i would ask for that, and would make sure that there is something in there about "re-negotiation."  not that it would be that formal, but just a clause that makes it clear that there is a process whereby you would discuss increased pay or whatever, if you feel that you wind up working a lot more hours than you had originally thought or whatever.  if something changes or does not live up to expectations, then you have the right to renegotiate.
