Giving during the Holidays

During this holiday season, im very interested in buying presents for homeless children and adults, and would also like to make christmas cookies to give to less fortunate people.  After doing some searching on the web, ive still come up with no information on how to go about doing this.  I am in pittsburgh area, and if anyone could give me some info on how I can give christmas cookies and presents to less fortunate people, that would be most helpful.

I'd say contact the homeless and womens & childrens shelters.  Also, try going to your local news station website - they probably have a couple links to organizations to donate to.

Look in your phone book and call local charities. I'm donating to the Salvation Army this year and I may work in a soup kitchen for the homeless serving Christmas dinner.

most malls usually have angel trees (or some variation on that theme) at this time of year. you can pick a child off the tree and it will have info. on their age/size, etc. and what they want for christmas. you get the gift and just drop it off at the mall, they take care of delivering it to the child. 


i actually wouldn't suggest calling a shelter mainly b/c non-profits are notorious for not returning phone calls in a timely fashion.  i agree with lmonet, about going to your local station's website. also contact a church/synagogue/place of worship, most will probably be organizing some sort of drive and you can give through them.


also if you want to bake cookies maybe contact an elderly care facility. ime they don't have as much bureacracy so it might be easier for you to do that for them.

this is a great idea. There are so many elderly people who are forgotten at Christmastime, so I am sure they would appreciate a little surprise or a note!

I *LOVE* the Salvation Army's Angel Tree.  I have been donating to that for years.  You actually get to pick out individuals (children, babies, or elderly) and they have a list of things they would like, along with sizes.  I definitely recommend using them.  HTH
