haha, it's called speg. squash cause when you shred it out of the shell, it resembles spaghetti.  When I was little I used to put marinara sauce on it, but that was years ago.  It's all stringy, and good with some butter

cut it in half length-wise (its hard to cut so use a big knife and some muscle), drizzle with some butter or olive oil and sprinkle of s&p. Then bake it in the oven. When its done (maybe 1/2 hour to an hour?) scrape the flesh with a fork and it will come out stringy like spaghetti. Then you can sprinkle with parmesan cheese or top with tomato sauce or garlic butter. Its good.

Here is a great site with recipes and cooking techniques: http://www.fabulousfoods.com/features/featuring/spagsquash.html

I usually bake mine whole (just pierce) it a couple of times and bake it with a little bit of water in the pan to keep it from sticking. I find it retains it's moisture better if cooked whole.

Check out the recipes on the site too.

Thanks everybody!! When I asked my sister how to cook it she e-mailed me back the following instructions:

To cook a spaghetti squash: Save yourself the time and throw directly in garbage.

I guess she doesn't like spaghetti squash!!!

I picked up Cooking Light and there are some instructions for cooking it and also a whole section on diff types of squash. Suddenly I want to try them all.

well, that explains why it sucked so bad when I just sliced and cooked it like regular squash!  wonder if I could fool my kids into thinking it's regular spaghetti?
