Stila Smudge Pot Users - Halleybird, Lilykind & Others?

Girls who use Stila Smudge Pots - I need your help!  I want to buy a smudge pot, because I am sick of crayon/pencil eyeliner that smears and rubs off.  I've heard great things from you girls and others about smudge pots, so I'm going to buy one.  I have a few questions though:



  • I wear black eyeliner now, should I buy a black smudge pot?  I just want to make sure it's not super dark.
  • What kind of brush do I use? I like a thin line, and I saw the Stila #13 brush on Sephora's website and it said it was the best brush to use..is that true?
  • What kind of technique do you use to apply?  Is it difficult? 
  • Can I line my lower lids as well w/the smudge pot?  I wear eyeliner on top and bottom.

shopchicago33, I decided to try the Smudge Pot after having the same frustrations. I was tired of all the eye pencils not staying on my eyelids. I was a little bit wary at first about using something that comes in a pot because I've never been that great at applying makeup, but I ordered it anyway. It's great, it stays put on my oily lids all day, and I can draw a finer line with this than I could with any pencil that I owned in the past. I use a brush with a very pointy tip.


The black is not overwhelming in the least, especially if you can draw a fine, precise line with the brush. I have a golden complexion that tans easily (and is almost always tanned) and my natural hair color is black/brown.

Thanks Lilykind!  Would you mind posting a picture of the type brush you use?  Sephora recommended a flat brush w/it, but I'm not sure that's the best option for a fine line?  TIA!

I use a brush very similar to this Laura Mercier one.

I love my smudge pot! I can't handle pencils; I am a makeup klutz and can't use them, plus they never get close enough to my eyelashes.


I use a brush like the one lilykind posted most of the time -- I think it's the easiest and gives the best result. Just make sure that if you don't want a defined line, you smudge it right away, because mine tends to dry quickly.


Sometimes, if I am feeling ambitious, I use a brush like this one:



and sort of press it into my lower lashes. It looks cool, but I have to have a lot of time to make it work.

This may sound retarded, but how do you smudge it?  Also, do you have to dampen the brush before dipping into the smudge pot? 


Halleybird - is this actually easier than a pencil eyeliner to apply?

I don't really do much, but if the line looks a little too straight, I rub my finger on it, toward my lashes. Oh, and I don't dampen it. The consistency is already sort of like shoe polish. I think fairywings posted one way to apply it with a sponge, too -- it's in the other smudge pot thread.  I do think it's much easier to use than eyeliner. Eyeliner was never, ever soft enough for me, and it never blended well.  It does take some practice, though, so don't be discouraged at first!

I'm stll perfecting my technique (I just posted about Smudge Pots). I do line my lower lids. Right now, I'm using a brush like Lilykind and halleybird. I use a small amount of the product on my brush and go right back and smudge it a little, just to soften the line, with a makeup sponge (recommended by fairywings). I use a lat brush like the one halleybird posted on the top lids with the technique she talked about. Then I smudge it the same way as the lower lids. I wear gray. I've always thought that black is too harsh for me, although I think it looks fantastic on other people.
