Advice on coats... please vote!

Like so many of you, I need a new coat. The thing is I have a puffer that's knee-length and a brown tweed coat (that's actually not warm at all and doesn't close well!).

What I really need is a plain black coat. The purpose is to wear it to work in the winter. To work, I wear super conservative clothes. Suits, Sweater jackets,... you get the idea. Total snooze-fest. Anyway, the coat has to look polished to go with suits.

So my debate is.. whether to spend or save.

My "save" coat is this AK coat.

$113.99 with F&F code = $91.19
I think this coat is okay but I'm concerned that while it maybe okay.. it may not be the best quality and may also seem a little casual for my super conservative work environment.

Also because this coat is so cheap. I was thinking about getting this long coat too (but I wouldn't get this on its own). I feel like it's rare but on occasion I feel the need for a long dress coat.

$170.99 with F&F code = 136.79

Both coats would be 227.98. Pretty good deal.

But........... I kinda want this J.Crew coat. I have owned J.Crew coats most of my life and really like their quality. I had a peacoat I wore from HS thru 1 year after college. I had a black dress coat that I wore for 3 years that was great but it didn't fit anymore so I donated it. I also like how J.Crew coats have Thinsulate lining.

At J.Crew I like two coats.

This is a wool/cashmere blend. With the extra warm lining.
$318 - I think I have an Amex code somehwere so I could get a few dollars off but it may just end up being that price with shipping etc.

I also like this one but it doesn't have the lining. What I like about it is that it's super modern and stylish. I think it would look good with dresses and pants. $298

Please vote! I am having trouble making up my mind. TIA!

I would definately go witht he camel J Crew coat, it's lovely. You'll need up buying a new coat every year and end up spending more than if you just originally bought the coat you really wanted.

I voted for this J. Crew one:

I think that it's probably the best quality coat, and you'll get the most use out of it - it will keep you warm and you can dress it up or down.  Plus it will probably last for a while.

I think you should get a J. Crew coat. Like you said, it's probably the one with the best quality and will alst for awhile. I'm a little iffy on the others, even if they are a good deal. I also have a black J. Crew coat I bought when I was still in college and it has held up very well.

I like this one the best.

i vote for this j.crew coat. i love the style of it. i like that the other one has the thinsulite lining, but i am personally not fond of the double-breasted coat.

I voted for the last one. I think coats are something that are worth spending money on. Also, even though it doesn't have thinsulate, it'll probably still be pretty warm. Except for a few weeks in January when I had to wear a down jacket, I made it through a Maine winter with a non-thinsulate J.Crew coat. I was also just at the store and this coat is stunning in person. If you haven't seen it, it has this cool subtle embroidery...

It's on the shoulders, waist, and cuffs.

I love the second J.Crew coat. It has such a beautiful silhouette, and it would look lovely with a dress as well so I think it would be very versatile.

I think it's always a good idea to have a long dress coat, so if you don't have one I kind of like the idea of the AK and the long dress coat.  Plus that's a very good deal with two coats.  if you have other cool coats that you like and just need something for work--the AK coat would be perfect.  OTOH, I really like the J Crew one, the first one (that's black).  I saw someone with that coat on the metro going home yesterday and it was cute.  If you don't care about getting the longer coat and don't mind sepnding the money, I'd get that one.

I also voted for this one:

I like the style and the length (I'm wearing a few-year-old black J. Crew double breasted peacoat right now, b/c my office is freezing and my sweater's not enough).  Mine is a shorter coat, and the longer length would be nice to have.  It's also more conservative than the last one, and the lining would be awesome to have.   Ok now I have to go get it!!

Me too.  I voted for the first JCrew coat, but if the last one is warm enough, go for that one.

if you don't have a b/c cup, go for #1, if you have a larger chest DO NOT go with double-breasted IMO.

Hotcocoa took the words right out of my mouth. I have a Jcrew double-breasted coat and the material is really heavy. I also don't like how I can't leave it open while walking if I get warm. But I do think J crew coats are great quality. Needless to say, I voted for the last one, it is beautiful.

The last one, without a doubt. Love it. I'm not a fan of double-breasted and there's nothing really unique about it. The last JCrew coat is just so classy and stylish. Go for it!
