UPDATE: hot yoga - what am I getting myself into?

UPDATE:

So I loooooooooved the hot yoga!  It was hot as hell, don't get me wrong, but I really enjoyed the athleticism of it.  I'd been hesitant to try regular yoga in the past b/c I figured I'd get somewhat bored (for example, I have tried meditation and do not have the attention span), but I think the heat and pounding heart addded a lot to the experience for me.  I was also pleased at how many of the poses I was able to do (though wobbly on one leg, as I have had a broken toe for a few weeks).  I never felt sick, but I did get a head rush once or twice when having to bend backward, so I just caught my breath and had some water.

Anyway... it was awesome.  I am so going back.  And you know, I sort of liked it as a date thing, being that gross and sweaty and a little klutzy in front of someone you like.  I'm glad I agreed to go.

********************

So I agreed to go to a Bikram (hot) yoga class tonight with this guy I have been dating.  Why not, right?  I am generally a game person.  Except I am totally inflexible!  Any of you familiar?  Will I make a total ass of myself?  I have never even been to a regular yoga class. Just wondering what to expect...  TIA

I think you'll be fine.  Just be careful, I've heard it is easy to pull a muscle in hot yoga, as the heat loosens up your muscles and people think they are more limber than they really are, which can be painful later.

I went once with a friend who has now become a bikram instructor.  I am not flexible even though I do regular yoga, and you can definitely do it without twisting yourself into a pretzel.

What I didn't like was the HEAT!  Man, I had no idea it was going to be that hot.  If you are going to a true bikram class, the room will be like a furnace.  I like sweating and getting a good workout, but I sweat my butt off and the room smelled of BO.  People wear as little clothes as possible, and it's not uncommon for people to throw up mid-class.  Luckily, that didn't happen while I was there.

You may love it, but I prefer regular yoga or ashtanga.  Just be prepared to be smelly afterwards and I wouldn't try too hard to look cute (no makeup!).

YIKES!!!  from what i hear bikram is NOT for beginners!!  my only experience w/ yoga is my denise austin dvd which i do in the privacy of my own home, and even that makes me sweat bullets.  i can't imagine doing it in front of a class, let alone a guy i was into.  that being said, you probably don't have that much to worry about w/ the inflexibility.  you can modify just about any move to your own ability.  be careful though because the hotness will make you more flexible and more likely to pull something.  have fun & let us know how it goes!!

I'm not concerned about your flexability.. I am concerned with your reaction to the heat! It is HOT in there.. You will sweat your A$$ off, no doubt about that. I hope you dont have a fainting history! Because I almost did (I faint in the heat often though) Not exactly something I would want to do on a date, but I am sure you will have a great time!

Wow, I just re-read what I wrote.. I hope I am not scaring you! LOL

Uh oh.  Well, I am in reasonably good shape, and I am a good judge of when I feel nasty, so I'd just stop and drink water or something.  This is not a guy who would care if I looked cute or not, so I am not too worried about that. I have never fainted, but I am going to get something to eat very soon to make sure I am not too hungry (I hear you shouldn't eat for a while beforehand?)  Heat doesn't bother me *that* much - I am very used to frequent saunas, and Finns like my Dad keep the sauna much hotter than americans (like 220 degrees).

That's me giving myself a pep talk.  Ugh... now what do I wear?

They say you are not supposed to eat 2 hours before yoga.  It's a fine line - no food = passing out, eating = nausea/throwing up, so have a snack like a banana.

Any cute workout outfit is fine, sleeveless if you have it and something more formfitting.  I would bring another shirt to change into afterwards.

I'm glad you liked it!  Although I'd recommend giving regular yoga a try too.  The problem with Bikram is it's the SAME 26 poses every time.  In an Iyengar class, you always have a couple new poses, or at least they change it up pretty frequently.  It's also really easy to hurt yourself in Bikram.  It's a combination of the heat loosening up your muscles more than normal, and the somewhat athletic/competitive atmosphere in the classes.  But the benefits can be awesome!  I always felt so fresh and energized after those classes.

That is terrific dc.  I keep saying that I am going to start doing Bikram and then I don't end up doing it so some reason or another.  I totally should do it - I've got nothing to lose.

What I am more excited about is this new guy...Details!  Details!!
