I was in a car accident on Saturday
Permalink Closed

It was horrible--my car was totalled and they took me to the hospital in an ambulance.  I'm fine--they just wanted to make sure I was ok because my chest was hurting from the airbag.  But the whole thing was really scary.

It sucks because I just finished paying off my car and was enjoying the extra cash from not making a car payment.  Plus I've been doing really well saving money (I set up direct deposit to save 25% of my paycheck).

So now I'm looking into new cars.  This is what I'm thinking right now:  Honda Civic Hybrid, Honda Accord Hybrid, VW Jetta.  I'm looking for something not too expensive but I also want safety--after the accident I'm a little traumatized.  The cars mentioned above have side airbags as well as the front airbags.

However, I don't know much about cars and I'm wondering if anyone has anything to say about the cars above (or if anyone has any suggestions for other cars).  Any information like how the gas mileage is, the quality of the car, etc. would be helpful.  My dad will be helping me since I'm clueless about this type of thing but I'd like to know a little if I can.

I'm so sorry about your accident!  That awful, but I'm glad you are all right.

I have a normal Accord, and I really like it!  Its my dad's old car - a 1994 and has over 130,000 miles and still runs great.  I would totally recommend a Honda.

I'm so sorry to hear about your accident!  I'm glad you're alright!

As far as cars go, I have a 1997 Honda Civic and I still love it.  As far as maintenance goes, all I really have to do is change the oil when I'm supposed to and that's pretty much been it.  Our family also has a 1988 Honda Accord hatchback that I learned to drive on, then my dad had for years, then he gave it to my grandmother, and now my it's my 17 year old cousin's car.  And it still drives great.  Mine gets between 25-30 mpg usually when I'm driving around town, which is what I mostly do.  If I drive on the freeway, the mpg is about 32 I think.

You might want to do some research as to whether or not a hybrid is right for you.  If you do mostly city driving, then it's great, but from what I hear, the miles per gallon is actually worse on a freeway than a non-hybrid car.  This is due to the fact that hybrids use gas when they're going and they switch to a battery when the car's idling.  If the car isn't idling much (ie, you're on a freeway) then you're just using gas and the extra weight of the car from the battery makes the gas mileage go down.  Hopefully that makes sense.

Anyway, I VERY HIGHLY recommend Hondas.  They're great cars, they're safe, get great gas mileage, and they'll go at least 100,000 miles before you'll have to replace anything.

Oh my gosh!  I'm glad you're okay!

I also recommend a Honda.  I just have a regular Civic, but it's great. Just like NCshopper said, they safe, get great gas mileage, and last forever if you take care of them

Glad you are ok!  I have a VW Passat (actually two, hubby liked mine so much he bought himself one).  We seriously considered the Jetta, but mainly went with the Passat because of the bigger back seat (thinking about car seats in the near future).  Jetta's are really good little cars, especially heard great things about the new one.  They fixed some of the interior layout, which I wasn't really fond of in the previous design (mainly the placement of the drink holders, very important to me cause I've always got a bottle of water).

I would suggest looking at Consumer Reports and doing lots of research about all of the cars to help make the best choice for you.  Happy car shopping!

You should be able to get Consumer Reports on newstands.  They do a yearly report on all the new cars.  We have that particular issue, so if you want me to send you the info, I'd be happy to.

I can photocopy the info for the cars you're looking at and either fax it or mail it to you.  Or I can scan it and send it to you as an e-mail attachment.

You can PM me your address, fax number, or e-mail...whatever is easiest for you.

Yup, newsstands or they also have an online site, but I think you have to subscribe to it.
