Anyone Know Anything About Digital Cameras?
Permalink Closed

I am asking my parents to get us a digital camera & printer for Christmas.  These are the three I'm considering:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000AYGDIO/103-7022889-9998262?v=glance&n=502394&%5Fencoding=UTF8&m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&v=glance

or

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0007TJ5OG/ref=pd_ecc_rvi_8/103-7022889-9998262?%5Fencoding=UTF8

or

 http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000AYKV4G/103-7022889-9998262?v=glance&n=172282&n=507846&s=electronics&v=glance

Anyone have either or can anyone tell me which is going to be better?  I basically just like to take pics of family and friends.

Also, I want to get a printer w/the camera - does anyone have a good printer they'd recommend?  There are so many options I'm so confused

Please help!

I like them in this order: 1, 3, 2. My dad has an elph and he loves it.

Re: printers. I have this one and I really like it. The color quality is really good, and you print directly from your compact flash:

HP PhotoSmart 100 Portable Inkjet Printerhttp://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00005OA4N/103-3291290-9722233?v=glance&n=541966&n=507846&s=pc&v=glance

The only downside is that there's no preview, so before you take the card out, you have to know that you want to print pictures # 3, 13 and 25, etc. But I think there's a Photosmart version with a preview box, too.

Thanks HB!  My sister in law warned me against an elph, but I really like them.

Anyone else, have any input?  I want a printer, but nothing too expensive, but still good quality.

I have a canon similar to #3 and I love it.  I would highly recommend it.  I like how it has the little area where you can grip it easily and the view finder in the back can pop out and rotate all around.  It is a little more bulkier than an elph but I find the extras make up for it in my opinion.

CC has an elph and she takes great pics and loves hers.

I can't tell the difference between 1 & 3 (the elph's) but I would go with 2 first and then either 1 or 3 next (whichever is the 450 model number and the 400 model number last)

I'm not sure about a printer. I just get all my pics developed at dotphoto.com and they turn out wonderfully.  If you get a printer go with an HP!!!

so pardon my ignorance, because i know nothing yet about digi cameras, but is a printer really necessary?  Also what is dotphoto?  How do you get the prints of your pics?

Oh its ok.  Believe me I don't know much about digi cameras either!!  I don't think you have to have a printer.  What I always heard (and someone can correct me if I'm wrong here) is that by the time you buy the glossy paper and the ink it can cost more to print pics than to just do it at either walmart or some place online.  Dotphoto.com is like snapfish.  You just set up an account and you just upload the pics from your hard drive and then order the ones you like.  if you want I can send you my account info for them and you can check them out and my pics online.  Just let me know

Yes please - send me that info!!!  Thanks, I appreciate it.  If it's as simple as that...either I can wait for the printer or not bother w/one at all I guess.

it probably is cheaper to not have a printer. My MIL uses costco's photo service and it's really cheap, too. I like the printer b/c I am impatient, though.

I just bought a Kodak Easyshare photo printer at Target for $68.  I shopped around and it was the best deal.  I got it yesterday (Black Friday), but I think the sale was for today too.  I agree that it's not as cheap as some people might think, but I've wanted one for the convenience, and if I want the picture in another size I'll just order from ophoto like I usually do.

So can you only print photos out in a certain size then Cricket?  I want one that lets you choose your size.  I'm like halleybird, I'm impatient and I always want my pictures now!

I haven't messed around with it, but I asked my husband that same question, and apparently it is the stupidest question I've ever asked him (WTF?  I'm not a computer guru, I thought it was a legitimate question!!!).  He says only 4X6 prints or smaller.

I don't think it's stupid! In fact, I am pretty sure my dad has a fancy HP one that prints 8x10s and 4x6s. I think it may be the copier/scanner/fax/printer one, though, and I can't find it online.

We have an HP laser printer 4 in1 thingie, and it prints photos well, in any size, but the quality of the printer that's made just for photos is better, at least in our case.  We don't have top of the line anything, though.

Ok, I don't know anything about computers, printers, or digi-cams... but we have an HP printer like halleybird's dad (except we have a seperate fax machine). I can print pictures in any size: wallets, 3x5 (that might be wrong, but it's something bigger than wallets and smaller than 4x6) 4x6, 5x7, 8x10. I'm prety sure that it's software that came with the printer (or maybe it just automatically installs itself . Like I said, I don't know anything). Maybe I'm wrong, but I know that we definitely didn't buy a proram to do it. We print lots and lots of pictures on that, and it's wonderful. Between the ink (which lasts a suprisingly long time) and photo paper costs, it's probably cheaper to send out your pictures to a photo service, like the others said. I like instant gratification, though, so I like to be able to put my pictures into the computer and print them out instantly.

Oh yeah... we buy photo paper from eBay, because we found a seller who offeres it for a lot cheaper than office supply stores and even Walmart. That brings the cost per picture down a lot. In the end, I prefer to print my own pictures.

FWIW, the printer we have is the hp psc 1210v all-in-one (printer, copier, and scanner). I can't find it online anywhere.

I think this IS the one my dad has! Now that I think about it, he has a separate fax, so it is just a printer/copier/scanner. Good call, Stephanie!

Ok, here's some printers I found, what do we think?

I'm thinking one of the HP's may be better quality than the Canon?  As long as I can print 4x6, I think I'll be fine..if I want bigger, I can always send them in for processing.  Sorry I know I'm being a pain, but there are so many options!  I really appreciate anyone's suggestions/advice.
