Smudge Pots-- Please help me.
Permalink Closed

So my Sephora order came in yesterday... naturally I was really excited, so I washed my makeup off my face and tried out my new stuff. When I ordered, I decided to try out some new products, because I've been in a makeup rut. Among the new products was a Stila Smudge Pot in gray. I usually do a soft line for eyeliner for daytime: I use a light-medium brown eyeshadow with this brush

Short Handle Flat Eyeliner BrushIf you can't tell, it has a wide, flat tip. I like that it gives a nice line, but it's not too distinct and hard.

Anyway, I tried out my Smudge Pot, using the same brush (it's the only eyeliner brush I have after purging). When I was done, I looked... Goth. It looked very harsh (almost like the start of a smoky eye look, even though I used a very soft touch and not much product on the brush). Don't get me wrong, I think a dark-lined eye can look totally hot and sexy, but I just don't want this look right now.

I've heard so many great things about Smudge Pots, and I even had it applied at Sephora once... it did not look the same as when I did it myself. Can someone tell me how to do it-- if I'm applying it wrong, using the wrong brush, if I should just return it? I'd be forever grateful . Thanks, girls!

I definitely think it's all about the brush. I apply my smudge pot with a very thin, slanted eyeliner brush. It looks sexy but not over-the-top. I got my brush at Sephora - it's their brand. When I get home tonight, I'll try to remember to figure out which one I have and maybe that will help you?

Yes, Christine... that would help me very much. I thought the brush might be the problem, but then I was thinking well if I just keep it flat, it should be fine... wishful thinking, no? Thanks so much!

Stephanie, I know what yu mean. I have the Sila Smudge Pot in Black, and had the same problem at first too. Then I worked with a makeup artist for something and I figured out how  do it perfectly. The trick is to use these-

Dab gently under your eyes after you dipped the triangle end into the pot. Then do your eyelid, dabbing instead of dragging it across your eye. I get a smudged smokey effect because it's not as harsh as a brush.

Anyway, these are really cheap so you should try it out. It works for me.

I love my smudge pot too, but it does take some getting used to. I can only use a brush like yours if I "press" the product between my lashes instead of lining, otherwise it's too harsh.

I use a brush similar to this one:Eyeliner Brush

and draw a really fine line very, very close to my lashes. If it looks too "done" I smudge it a little.

Thanks, everyone. I'm trying your tips and they're working... it's just a different look, so I guess it takes some getting used to

fairywings, great suggestion!  I've been trying to figure out how to use the smudge pots too.  Excited to try this one out.  Thanks again!!  And Stephanie, thanks for posting the question
