The bf and I went to see Walk the Line this weekend and it was fantastic! My bf is a big Johnny Cash fan and we were really impressed by how much like Johnny Cash Joaquin Pheonix was. Reese was also great and I think she looks adorable as a brunette. Joaquin was wonderful (I luuurve him) and he sang well.
i saw this on saturday- so good! it was a little long, but joaquin phoenix and reese witherspoon were great! i thought they had really great chemistry and i was so impressed that they did all the singing- joaquin was especially good. it must have been pretty difficult to emulate johnny cash's distinctive voice.
"ring of fire" and "walk the line" have been in my head ever since i saw the movie!
BF and I saw it on Saturday. So amazing...the story ws really weld told and the acting was impeccable. Both of them were really close to Johnny and June's real performances, but I was most amazed with Reese's performance...she sounds EXACTLY like June. If Joaquin or Reese don't get at least a Golden Globe nod I will be very dissapointed.
I can't wait to see this movie!!!! I'm waiting for my lil sister to come home for Thanksgiving (she goes to NYU). I am such a huge Joaquin Phoenix fan and I know he must have done an amazing job.

I couldn't agree more! The BF and I saw it last night and it was phenomenal!! Joaquin really looks and sounds like Johnny Cash - it was unbelievable! And Reese was outstanding too. I love her as a brunette too. For 2.5 hours, it really flew by.
I liked this movie, but didn't find it to be as good as it was hyped up to be. This excerpt of a review pretty much sums up my feelings...
"This movie is a lot less interesting than it might be. Though it's not bad -- in fact, it’s rather sweet -- it's too simple a portrait of a very complicated and calculating entertainer."
I guess I just felt like something was missing. It was good, but it wasn't as epic as a movie about Johnny Cash's life should be. Also, although I didn't have a problem with it, I didn't think that Joaquin and Reese looked or sounded very much like Johnny or June. There were a few moments, like when June was caught on Johnny's guitar and she was yelling out to the stage, or when Joaquin delivered memorable Johnny lines like, "I'm Johnny Cash." Other than that, they both pretty much spoke in their normal voices. As for singing Joaquin was nowhere near as deep and gravelly as Johnny, and Reese was just flat out better than June. Lookswise, Johnny was a lot bigger than Joaquin and didn't have his pointy look at all. And Reese is prettier than June. However, I don't think any of this affected the movie and was probably better cause otherwise they're just impersonators. I thought Reese and Joaquin were both great actually. Despite not looking or sounding like either one, they really captured them.
On a side note, how great were those tours they were going on? Jerry Lee Lewis, Elvis Presley, June Carter and Johnny Cash? Awesome.
I loved this movie! I just saw it on Sunday and thought it was great. I didn't really know much about Johnny Cash, and I knew even less about June Carter going into the movie, but I still enjoyed the movie and the music.
I can see where you're coming from Maddie, about the movie being overly simplistic. It did seem that way, but I looked at the movie as mostly a love story about two people, instead of a biography of them.
I want to see this badly, I love Reese and I love Joaquin already and the Cash/Carter love story sounds compelling!
I was sad to hear, however, that Kathy Cash, the daughter of Cash's first wife (now deceased) thought that while the acting was great, she said that her mother was incorrectly portrayed as a shrew when in reality she was dealing with a drug abuser who was infrequently coming home to his family. I really think that biographical movies like this could be even better if they could include just five minutes to include details of painful family memories, for me it adds depth and humanity that makes the characters even more flawed and therefore relatable....and even more award worthy....I am kind of a picky movie watcher though, don't mind me.

I heard that also (regarding what Kathy said about Vi). I didn't think they portrayed her as shrew. I heard Kathy didn't like it because her mother did support his career and she didn't think the movie showed that. I thought it did. My take on that is- who wants to watch their mother putting up with an abusive husband who does drugs and is never around. It would be hard for me to watch and I would never think they portrayed my mother correctly- so i think that's what happened here.
I really liked this movie and didn't expect to. I didn't know anything about Cash or Carter going into it. I personally, liked how the movie hit every emotion (I was sad, upset, laughed, was happy, etc).

I agree with HeatherLynn - I don't think Vivian Cash was portrayed as a shrew at all. In fact, I sympathized with her. She had to raise their children at home, on her own, while he was out touring, doing drugs, cheating on her, etc.

I agree w/ HeatherLynn too. I didn't think there was anything wrong with the way Vivian Cash was portrayed. She was portrayed as a very supportive wife who loved him and was genuinely concerned about him.
