Black to a Wedding?

I think if you know the couple fairly well, so there can be no question of it being disrespectful, then it is fine. If you are going as a guest of someone else, or if they are just acquaintances, I would go with another color. JMO

I don't see why not. Our wedding was at 6 p.m. with reception immediately following (reception ran until 1 a.m.) and nearly everyone wore black. And while I understand Lisa's POV, we saw close friends *and* also those not close to us wearing black at our own wedding - and we were not offended in the least. I think black's really not an issue anymore these days. The only two things I would NOT wear to a wedding are things that are too skimpy / too much cleavage and something white (the idea being that white will distract from the bride). Though my cousin's GF wore a white/cream dress...but she couldn't compete with the bride (moi) LOL.

It's never a bad idea to ask first though, I suppose. We're pretty laid back about many things, but some girls do turn into Bridezillas and want to regulate every last detail.

I think that wearing black to a wedding used to be a no-no but IMO it's acceptable now. I wore a black dress to the last evening wedding I attended (I did not actually know the bride or groom; the mother of the bride was a co-worker) and almost everyone else there was wearing black as well. I agree w/ atlgirl that it's most important to avoid anything too sexy and to stay away from white/cream.

I think black has become pretty standard. I felt weird wearing it for the first time to a wedding, but I've noticed most of my friends don't even consider it an issue - especially with an evening wedding.

I think it's generally fine for an evening wedding. If it's a black tie wedding, I bet a lot of other guests will be wearing black too. Have fun! What are you thinking of wearing?

Yes, black is fine now. Maybe not a long black dress, black stockings, black shoes w/ a black veil and sunglasses, but almost anything else, tastefully done, goes. I wore a black dress to a friends wedding and just added a few shots of color.

Well, I am still choosing betwee a black cocktail dress and a BCBG dress from a few seasons ago.

Black is more the standard that I have seen at weddings the past few years. The only time you don't see a lot of it is in the summer, but still a good far amount.

Black used to be a bad omen at a wedding, but it is so prevelent in fashion now that that standard has changed. I remember when my parents hated black clothes, this was back when I was in 8th grade, I am 29 now. My father basically wears all black now, so they obviously have changed their ideals also.

So wear your black proudly now!
