taking in a waist

I'm not sure what section forum to post this in, do I will post it here.

I have been sewing for 6 years but I have never been able to take in the waist of pants and them look decent.  I do the darts, but then the rear of the pants look baggy.  Any pointers you can give me?

Do you sew pants from scratch? If not, maybe you could buy some pants patterns similar in structure to the pants you have and want to alter, and study the patterns, and how the pieces fit together, then use that to make the best alterations.
