speaking of knitting...
Permalink Closed

i never thought i'd want to knit socks, but i have a sudden overwhelming urge to do so.

i've been wanting to make some type of advent calendar for my son and i just came across the cutest idea in an old issue of martha stewart kids that uses numbered socks (in coordinating patterns, colors etc.) hung by a clothespin on a string... i'd hang them on our fireplace mantel.

i know i'm way too particular to actually find 25 coordinating socks that met my approval — these will be hanging in my living room for an entire month afterall. i thought i'd give knitting one a try. (of course, i'd need 25 for the calendar)

has anyone made socks? is it difficult? time consuming? i probably have a pattern in one of my books. any tips? suggestions?

thanks!

You really don't want to talk to me about socks. I just took a class and i HATED it. But I am told that people either love or hate it, so you may end up in the other camp. Here are the reasons I hated it, which may not apply to you:
* It is knit on size 5 double points, ie: lots of knitting & little show of progress. I like instant gratification
* I have corpal tunnel & it was HELL on my wrists because I am a tight knitter
* It isn't cheap - you can buy socks for very cheap. Although it was cheaper than a lot of the scarves I have made! And you can find relatively cheaper sock yarn on ebay, but I took mine at a yarn studio so of course that wasn't an option
* Time consuming. I did only knit at night, but my class was 3 weeks & I had homework to be at the next area of the sock by the end of the next class & it took me the full week each time, so 3 weeks for 1 sock.

Now, having said all that, my 2 friends that took the class with me loved it. And one of them had 2 knee socks in the same time frame (mine was a crew sock). And sometimes I think the whole "homework" thing is what made me mad. I knit to relax, not to be on someone else's timeframe & it stressed me.

I am going to try to do Christmas stockings by next year, giving me a long timeframe to do them, they are on bigger needles with bigger yarn, so that seems better to me.

If you find that you don't have a pattern, try craftster.org - they have TONS. I came across a very pretty vintage pattern there & if I decide to do more, I'd do that one. I'm looking for the link, if I find it I'll come back & post it. Here is the link - I imagine it's not appropriate for your project, but pretty all the same!

Sorry, but thought I'd share! But hey, try it. Worse case is you'll end up with ONE sock like me

I'm back and forth about sock knitting.  I do enjoy knitting them because they are a small discreet project, yet semi challenging project.  On the other hand, I don't really wear socks unless I'm at the gym, and I'd rather spend my knitting time knitting something I'll use.

It isn't hard once your get used to turning the heel.  When you first read the pattern, it'll probably seem strange and hard to picture the final product.  You kind of have to be willing to trust the pattern and go with it.

I found these two sites really helpful when I did my first pair of socks:

Oh, and if you can't find a pattern, I can put the one from my class here - it's a very basic sock.

Here is a picture in case you care.

Awww, now I kinda like it again!

cute sock!

thanks for your input, girls. i just inquired about a sock class at the knitting shop near my house and i might sign up to get some help. i'll most likely end up hating it (and thus with only one sock) but at least i'll learn a bit out of the deal.

I don't want to discourage you, really, you may love it! And I learned a lot lot lot because a lot of the directions are different that other patterns I'd read, so now I know those things, ya know?

no, no quite the opposite — i'm not discouraged at all. i feel driven and completely motivated to knit a perfect sock. even if it is only ONE sock!
