Love this song! I'm such a nerd. I have the Mariah Carey version and that girl's version.
um i love this song so much i listen to it when it's not christmas, it makes me that happy. i love traditional carols, especially in latin. adeste fideles (sp?) i think it's o come all ye faithful in latin. i also love hark the herald angel sings, and carol of the bells.
for more modern songs i like
baby please come home -- u2
christmas rap -- the waitresses (merry christmas, merry christmas but i think i'll miss this one this year)
What?!?! No one else likes "Dominic the Donkey?" My kids beg me to play that song over and over! Jingity-jing (hee-haw, hee-haw) It's Dominic the Donkey! Jingity-jing (hee-haw, hee-haw) The Italian Christmas Donkey!
I personally love the original "Santa Baby" (maybe by Billie Holiday?). Much better than the Madonna version of the 80s.

Yes, Eartha Kitt. For some reason, it came to me during the middle of the night. I like the song as a sex symbol song, not as a dumb blonde song **cough**Madonna**cough**
I have two wildly different types that I like: the old, haunting, medieval ones, and the cheesy 50's ones that make me feel all cozy.
The old medieval ones, or at least I think of them as medieval, that I love are O Holy Night, Coventry Carol, Lo How a Rose e'er blooming... so stunningly beautiful I am getting choked up just thinking about them. For an atheist I have a really intense love of old Christian praise music.
and then I love all the bing crosby-esque christmas tunes... chestnuts roasting, I'll be home, etc.
but my FAVORITE, which I can't find to buy anywhere, is a version of Baby It's Cold Outside by Ray Charles and Betty Carter. Incredible. Absolutely incredible. Two heart-stoppingly unique, gorgeous voices. Cannot get enough of it.

I actually have the ray charles/betty carter version. I just dl-ed it last night. If you want it, PM me and i can email it to you
you guys who like Mariah's "All I Want for Christmas" (which I also love, btw) think *you're* nerds...I still listen to my New Kids on the Block Christmas album. But I've never liked one "for the children"...bleh.
My favorites are O Holy Night sung by almost anyone and Christmas (Baby Please Come Home) sung by U2. They're very different, but there they are.
Oh, there's also this Dave Matthews song...I don't know if it's really a Christmas song exactly, but it is called "Christmas Song" and it's kind of sweet.
I agree with many of you that I love O Holy Night - it's such a beautiful song! I also love It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas, and Winter Wonderland, and White Christmas. I really like almost all Christmas songs though.
shopgirl82 wrote: song for a winter's night: sarah mclachlan This is a beautiful song. Also on the Jewel Christmas cd, "Joy: a Holiday Collection" (it's good, okay?) there is a version of Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer that is acapella with Jewel and someone else singing harmony (my brother swears it's Jewel's mother, but I'm not convinced). I listen to it on loop.
I have that cd and it IS her mother singing with her! Hahahahaha! I thought no one listened to it except for me. There are a handful of songs that she sings that are really good. I wish she'd just stick to singing and drop all the cowboy/poetry crap. I used to love Jewel so much...
My absolute favorite Christmas song, without exception, is Willie Nelson's Walking in a Winter Wonderland. It's perfect. Absolutely perfect.
Anyone remember that old episode of Designing Women where they go to a prison (I think) and sing I'll Be Home For Christmas? I can't remember who sang it on that show but I loved it and think of it every year.

Oh gosh, I am so glad you have that cd too. Was it Dixie Carter on Designing Women? For some reason I think she's a singer.
Sephorablue reminded me of my favorite traditional Christmas song: Lo, How a Rose E'er Blooming. It might be my favorite song ever. Another one is Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence. The tune is just so beautiful. We sing it at our candlelight service and it just moves me. I think you would like it, SephoraBlue--it has that haunting quality too.
