Banks you like?
Permalink Closed

Okay I have seriously had it up to here with Chase. I have been with them since I was 10 years old... when they were Chemical.

I think I am ready to switch banks. Anyone have any good experience with their bank and can recommend them?

i'm with you on the chase.

i have an account with usaa but they aren't local so i used chase so i can have a bank to easily make deposits - if i had direct deposit available to me, i would use only usaa (only available to military families)

if you aren't military, i've heard good things abuot compass.  i'm thinking of switching.

Well I would recommend Bank One, because I work for them and love them as my bank too, but we just merged w/Chase - so I guess that doesn't help you.

i hate all banks, but they're a necessity. i recently opened an account with commerce bank. they have great hours (esp. on sat/sun) and free checking so i'm pretty happy with them. the only complaint i have is that there online bill pay takes a long time to go through. with my old bank if i scheduled a payment from my account on the 16th, the payee would receive it on the 16th. now i have to wait a couple of days. and it's kind of annoying.

I've always had really good luck with Credit Unions - have you looked into that at all, Dot?

I am with you Dot on Chase.  I have been with them since I was born (24 years) and they are really making me mad!!  I am debating between Wells Fargo and BOA.  The only bad thing is they don't have either in Louisiana where my parents are so if there is an emergency it might be a problem.  I'm waiting until after I get my new car in early spring '06 to switch since it might help with my financing.

Bank One was notorious for being awful between TX and LA residents for years (thanks to my friends at LSU from TX) and I never had a problem until I moved from LA to TX this year.  The Chase/Bank One merger went through in LA in June but not in TX until the end of Sept.  So when I came and opened a safe deposit box here at Chase (I didn't know better) I got the run around because I didn't have a "Chase Account" and got assessed a Late fee when I told them in LA I have a Chase Account!!!

Then last week I went to cash a $50 check at Chase and it took 20 mins and I got the run around because I have a LA account not a TX account.  What difference does it make? Its a nationwide bank!

Oh and I went to different branches so trying a new one is pointless.

I have to just 2nd the Commerce Bank because, I do work for them but I also bank with them. We have a lot of perks that other banks don't offer. Our banking day ends at 6:00 instead of 2:00 like most banks, so if a deposit is made by 6 it's credited the next day no matter if the check is out of state ect. We also make payroll checks available immedietly for those that don't get direct deposit.

I myself am w/a credit union, and I LOVE THEM, I've been w/them for almost 16 yrs., and they KNOW ME - personally, for when I go inside the lobby, they SPEAK TO ME, and I think that's great! I've only dealt w/maybe TWO banks, and I'm no longer 'banking' w/them, so I'd def. check into a credit union.

I love my credit union too. I used to use Bank of America and Wells Fargo, but this is better. Plus, I like that they aren't making a profit from me.

I don't blame you for hating Chase...I remember when my parents had a Chemical banking account too.

To me, convenience is one of the most important things. I refuse to pay ATM fees because there isn't an ATM my bank operates nearby. Primarily for this reason, I currently bank with Bank of America. I also have a joint account with my dad at Citibank. Both banks have treated me well. I've never had any problems with customer service. All the tellers at the BoA and Citibank locations I frequent have been nothing other than nice, helpful and informative. The people at the BoA across from my work know me by name and everything.

My brother has accounts with many different banks (he does it to gauge stuff like customer service...yes I realize this is weird), and he is very fond of Washington Mutual and was fond of Fleet prior to their being absorbed into BoA.

M&T Bank is a pretty decent bank, but there aren't many branches in NY. M&T was where I had my first account and it was a pain to do anything there because there aren't a whole of branches.

Well we are fully merged now, so hopefully we don't start noticing any bad changes

just wondering- why all the chase hatred?  i just opened a chase acct- lilykind is right- only like 5 m and t's in nyc.  so i have a couple hundred in my chase for atm withdrawals just because there is a chase atm everywhere, and still use m and t as my checking (rent checks, credit card bills, etc.)  the only thing i seriously dislike about chase so far is how long it takes my checks to clear into my acct. and how long electronic transfers take.  m and t takes half the time- paypal and ing transfers are there within two days.  with chase it can take up to a week

I bank at WellsFargo and I've never had any complaints. My checking account is free and it overdrafts into my cc account (also WF). Anytime I've ever had any issues (lost check, stolen card, etc.) they've always been very nice and immediately helped me out. I also have my student loans through them so it's a very convenient transfer of funds each month. And there are ATMs all around, so no problem there.

I'm thinking about joining a credit union though because they offer a loan program where you can pay off your credit cards and pay the loan off in 5 years (way better than debt). Anyone know anything about these kind of things?

I have Citi and they have been good to me. I used to have Chase, but hate them. Gary has them and works for them, that's the only reason he has it.

I used to have HSBC and the municipal credit union and they were both ok. I really like Citi because there are branches all over the world. I had to get rid of the credit union because they are local only and since we travel 4-5 times per year, that wasnt working for us.

Can you get a USAA membership?  If you're eligible, you should read up on them www.usaa.com.  I've had great experiences with USAA.  Their customer service is insanely good, they do renter's insurance, car insurance, savings, investments, everything.  They also reimburse $15.00 of ATM fees/month since they have no ATMs of their own.  The only downside to them, if you see it as one, is that most of your banking is done online.  I love their online banking site, it's very easy to use, and I can always call their customer service and talk to a real live person right away.  Their online bill pay is excellent also.  If you have a bill company that doesn't accept online bills, you can still put them on your USAA list and then when you pay the bill online with USAA, they print out a paper check from your account and mail it to your bill company.
