Our niece turns 16 at the end of this month, and I'd like to get her something a little special. Problem is, she lives in Colorado, and we live in Georgia. We haven't seen her since April 2004, and her mother is NO help in letting me know what she likes / dislikes. She was a tomboy in the past, but had turned into quite a girly-girl the last time we saw her...any of you with kids, or around teens regularly (Halleybird?), have some suggestions for me? I truly have no idea at this point what her preferences are, and no good way of finding out, unfortunately. Any suggestions are most appreciated!

If I were 16 I'd probably appreciate a giftcard (clothes, music, sephora, barnes and noble,) more than anything. Or how about a cashmere sweater, or diamond studs?
Thanks ladies - we have done GC's before, but being her 16th b-day I want to do something a bit more special. I don't know if she's into or likes cashmere, and I think I would shy away from that because *everything* in their house goes into the washer. They don't know from hand washing or dry cleaning *sigh*
I'm looking to spend up to $100, I think. Usually our b-day/holiday designations are around $50-ish. I like the idea of diamond studs and will look for some that are size-appropriate. I think the ipod and video cam are great suggestions too, but maybe for the holidays or for another b-day. My mom gave me jewelry for my 16th, 18th, 21st, and 25th, so I think the studs are a winner, though I am not sure she won't just lose them...oh well, all I can do is send some and see.
ejc - I like the curly girl stuff - very original. Unfortunately, the family may be losing their house (!) so I am hesitant to get wall art right now because she may have no place to hang it...
