Good news: it was $409 because of the anniversary sale.
Bad news: it was NOT cute. Ugh, it looked cheap- like it could have cost $75. The wool wasn't a smooth thick wool like on nice coats, but had a striped texture to it. It had plasticky buttons and was super tight in the waist. The pleating in the front looked ok, but in the back it looked like i had a bustle on. my friends said it was "very puritan" but not in a good way. So its going back.
SOOOOOOOOOO now i have to find another winter coat, and pretty fast. I will pay up to $700 for the right coat, but now i'm scared and want to try to find one in a store. I prefer boutique brands to chain stores because i don't want everyone to have the same coat as me. Has anyone seen any cute coats (chain ok if its really awesome)? NY girls- any recommendations on places to look? Honey- i was looking at Mackage coats- they are very nice, but i didn't want an asymmetrical coat or one with leather on it, and those were the only ones i liked! I wish mackage put out more styles. here is an example of a coat i'm obsessed with:
Awww that sucks. I feel like I'm always seeing adorable winter coats that I don't need and now of course I can't think of particular stores. Oh actually there's this boutique called Gigi which I think is on Mott or Mulberry around Prince Street and they just opened a location on the Upper East Side. I pass by the UES one regularly and they always have really nice coats in the window. Classic but not totally boring. I haven't gone in yet because I'm trying to not shop but maybe check them out.
I'm totally in love with this $500 Prudence coat but I don't know what the quality is like or what stores carry it and it's probably not classic enough for your purposes.
hey lynnie--there's a really cute shop called meg (312 e. 9th street) that the owner designs all the stuff herself so you never see anyone else wearing it. it's all very cute. i just got a coat from the LA store this week, it was about $400 and it's bee-yoo-ti-ful. it's aysmmetrical, though, i know you said you weren't into that. it's the same color as the red one cc posted, but it has a high, dramatic collar that buttons all the way up, and split sleeves, and is about mid-calf length. they also made it in grey, and i think black and/or taupe. i don't know if that helps you, but worth a shot maybe!
i'm sorry your coat didn't work out. i actually thought of it this morning when i saw dc and it had a blurb about tracy reese's sample sale. finding the perfect coat is so hard. i really like the prudence one cc posted. it's so glam. i'm not really sure where to tell you to start, i haven't really been in the stores in ages. searle usually has a good selection of coats, but i wouldn't necessarily buy something from them, b/c they tend to have a ridiculous mark-up. i'll keep my eyes out and let you know if i see something. also have you looked at theory? i can't remember their website (it would have the complete collection), but they might have what you're looking for.
thanks everyone! i will check those stores- i also looked at places that mackage is sold and i will check out those boutiques for other coats. i went to searle honey, nothing really stood out aside from the mackage coats. i like this one:
but its pricey and not sure about the checkerboard wool. The prudence one is cute, but theres an urban one almost identical for $140, and i really don't want an asymmetrical coat. Maybe as my next coat, but my first one has to be pretty standard with a twist. remember- i don't own a single wool coat and i live in nyc! its cold here!
I lurve the milly coat that jmango posted. Here are some others I found. Many of them aren't anything special but I thought I'd post whatever I could find.

I have this Trovata coat that tri sarah tops posted and it is thin (basically a light weight trench). Unless this is a winter version? I love my trench and it fits really well.
hey lynnie--i thought of you today because in the daily candy weekly deals e-mail, they had a picture of that prudence coat from le train bleu for a pretty good deal (i think 25% or 30% off). just FYI in case you didn't get it.
