What to wear to a (possibly maybe star-studded) environmental awards dinner?
Permalink Closed

I agreed to go with my aunt to the Global Green Awards dinner on Monday night. She got the tickets from Leonardo DiCaprio's mom and I don't know if he'll be there but Glenn Close is the emcee and there could be other celebs there as well. But it's also on a Monday at 6:30 in a hotel which isn't super swank (Hotel Roosevelt for any NYC girls).
At first I agreed because I thought I would finally wear my vintage Versace cocktail dress which is kind of sparkly. But Leo's mom apparently said that it's semi-formal but she thinks that means more fancy business wear since it's an awards ceremony and not a rich people benefit plus it's early on a Monday. Now I have no clue what to wear.

I was thinking of going with this which is kind of boring but it's at least a full outfit (I have shoes and a bag that would work with it) and I would look presentable but wouldn't stand out which is what I'm aiming for.
It's a wool crepe skirt with kick pleats at the hem, jersey top with silk bust.

My coworker is telling me that it's too boring and he thinks I should wear my Prada skirt but I don't know...I can't figure out what shoes and bag I would use...here are possible outfits for that skirt.

I really don't want to buy something new (although I'll need new shoes if I go with the Prada skirt) and I don't care much about wowing people with my outfit. Please help!

cc you have to post a pic of the versace!

i think those two outfits are nice but they are not evening enough.

i guess i know you have a ton of frilly frocks that could be given a business-y twist to them.

See the thing is my aunt says the impression she got from talking to Leo's mom is that it isn't really an evening wear sort of event and that since it's an awards dinner sponsored by a nonprofit there might be lots of employees etc. there in just slightly nicer than usual business attire. So I'd rather just wear something plain and black with nice jewelry than something that is obviously a fancy cocktail dress. The Versace has an overlay of black silk with some sort of sparkly thread in it so it is totally bedazzled looking! Plus I think most of the outfits I posted look fancier in person.

I found some pictures from another one of this organization's awards ceremonies and now I'm even more confused. Granted this event honored Gorbachev so it probably was probably a much bigger deal but still that one actress is really fancy and Charlize is all dolled up as well. I saw a pic of Glenn Close in a fancy pansuit though and the guys are all not that formal.

ETA I guess that's not Charlize.. but the one on the left. i'm not down with her shoes! it's taking away from the dress!

I think you'll be safest with the black and some cool accessories - I wouldn't try to fit in too much, but that's me...

I just had to comment on this picture - this chick looks so uncomfortable and self-conscious (and I agree those are definitely not the shoes to wear with that dress - knees down beach - knees up super self conscious in a beautiful dress)

that skirt is gorgeous! what kind of material is it? i'm thinking that maybe you could do something with texture. like if you have a velvet top or jacket (in a jewel tone), that would look really nice, but not be too dressy.  or maybe a satiny top.

i love the cream skirt, esp. with the first two tops, and the all-black outfit looks great on you, too.  i think any of those choices would probably hit the dressiness-level you are looking for.  but i live in a more casual city, so i think it's generally okay to be a bit more formal in NY.

Maybe you could through a blazer over this, and then if it's a little fancier once you get there you can lose it?

It's not so much that I want to fit in, more just that I don't want to stand out either because I'm dressed way too casual/fancy or in a really attention-getting trying too hard outfit. Plus to be honest my aunt is basically obese and she's a huge lush and an even huger and louder flirt soooo I already feel like I might stick out a bit and be a tiny bit embarrassed yet at the same time I don't to embarrass her by dressing inappropriately either. And I also get really awkward at events like this and if I feel like my outfit stands out in a bad way I'm totally going to be standing like that actress all night!

honey the skirt is wool so it's weather appropriate but it's also kind of thick so I often have trouble finding a top that works with it. I usually wear it with a sweater but obviously that wouldn't be fancy enough for this event. I was thinking about doing something with texture as well. The gold top is textured, I could wear nude fishnets. I would still need to get a pair of shoes over the weekend but I'm just glad that people think these options are ok!

I'll keep working on it this weekend and will let you know what I decide on.
