Eek! I accidentally tried to poison myself!

I'm such a dumbass. Seriously. Here's the sequence of events:

Sunday: I cook. Nice, right? I shouldn't be let in a kitchen but whatever.

Monday evening: I come home around 10ish and notice the apartment smells funny. I take out the garbage even though there was hardly anything in it thinking I threw something icky away and now it smelled bad. I complain to the boy on the phone Monday night that I feel weird and I must be getting a cold or something.

Tuesday: Still smells bad. I can't figure out what it is. I go to work. I have dizzy spells all day. I think I must need new glasses b/c I'm having trouble seeing and I'm having the dizzy spells. I go to the gym with a friend that night and again complain about feeling icky, although I don't know why. I get home and just feel completely lethargic. I just figure my period is coming next week or something. Still smells bad in the apartment.

Wednesday: I wake up with a terrible headache. I call in sick to work because I think I'm getting a migraine. I lay in bed for a few hours and then move to the living room. Smell is terrible. I decide something must have crawled in one of my cabinets in my kitchen and died. (Gross, I agree, but I couldn't think what else could be making such an awful smell.) I go into work for an hour for a "must attend" meeting and then go back home. I light about, oh, 10 candles, including 2 in the kitchen to try and get rid of the bad smell. The boy comes over in the evening (I want him to look through my cabinets to find out if a mouse died or something because I'm too chicken). He comes in and notices it smells badly of gas. I notice my stove is stuck between "off" and "lo." I turn it off and realize that's what the bad smell was and that's probably why I've been feeling like ass. I also deduce that I am officially one of the dumbest people alive (currently).

Thursday: I call my doctor and she tells me I carbon monoxide poisoned myself! Aren't I brilliant? She said I can't sleep at home tonight but I figure if I made it through Sunday night, Monday night, Tuesday night, and Wednesday night, I can make it through tonight, especially considering I turned everything off yesterday.

To be on the safe side, I've decided to go to a hardware store after work and buy a carbon monoxide detector. If the house is still at unsafe levels (windows are open and fan is going currently), I'll spend the night elsewhere. Otherwise I think I'm good.

Anyone have any good recs for CO detectors??

Did I mention I'm such a dumbass? 'Cause I'd like to stress that if at all possible.

OMG !

Wow.  That is so, so awful and scary, but at the same time extremely hilarious - but only because you are okay!

I you Blubirde!  Maybe you could get your doctor to write you a prescription for pizza or something .

Oooohhh pizza!! That sounds yummy. I'll tell my ass not to hold on to the calories because the doctor said I have to. Oh yeah.

At first I said I wasn't going to tell anyone the story of my attempted poison but then I decided it was just too damn funny not to share. Besides, if you can't laugh at yourself, who can you laugh at?

I can't decide if I'm really unlucky or really lucky... I think I'll stick with lucky for now.

OMG! I'm so glad you're ok, but your storywriting skills are so exceptional, you made me burst out laughing!

On the bright side, you know you'll never make THAT mistake again, right? (Well, either you'll triple-check the burners each time you're done cooking, or you'll never cook again!)

yikes! i am so glad you are okay.

i always tell myself i am not going to tell stories about stupid things i do, but they are usually funny and i find them spilling out anyway.  like the time i fed the wrong parking meter on the street and got a ticket on my own car.

Ha! This made me laugh out loud. That's pretty hilarious. Did you try to get out of the ticket by telling that story? I bet you could have...

no, i just paid it out of shame.  the best part was that i had so much change in my wallet, i was like, "yes! i can shop up and down this street all afternoon because i can buy so much time on the meter!" when i was walking back up to my car, i was so confused about the small piece of paper on my windshield and figured it must have been someone putting flyers on the cars like they sometimes do, for car detailing and computer services and stuff.  i was walking across the street puzzling over why they only gave me a flyer and no one else on the street.

i am such a dork.

blubirde you are absolutely not a dumbass!  The stove is defective.

You know ever since I got pregnant mine seems to be the same way.  Somehow burners stay on after I remove cooking pots.  It seems the dial somehow does not go to off if I am roasting something...hmm I wonder if we have the same brand stove

So now i can tell my hubby "no, the baby is not eating my brain, the stove is defective just like blubirde's"

Edit: because it also seems my keyboard is defective and the keys are in the wrong place, or simply have jumped off the keyboard making me unable to type

You're not dumb. My old boss used to do that once a week in the work kitchen. actually, she was such a witch I kind of thought she was maybe sort of hoping the whole kitchen would blow up with me in it, but I just chekced the burners every day after she left... I'm just glad you're ok!!!! And now it's a GREAT story...

One of my cousins died of carbon monoxide poison just a couple of weeks ago, so your story kind of freaked me out.  I'm really glad you are okay!

OMG! I'm so sorry. As much as I make fun of myself for being stupid and not recognizing gas when I smell it, I really am going out tonight to by a CO detector to keep something like this from happening again. I do feel really lucky actually.

OMG- this happened to us once.  Does opening windows help?  I'm really scared a roomie or me might leave it on by accident and kill us all.  Just wondering if carbon monoxide can "escape" or whatever.

Why in the heck do you not have a carbon monoxide detector?  Now that I have a gas fireplace, it scares me a bit.  I have never had gas anything.  When I first turn it on, I can smell it and freak out that I may be getting poisoned!

because of your story, I TRIPLE checked my burners last night after cooking. I hate having gas...it's one of the things I didn't like about this house.

Does anyone know how many CM detectors you're supposed to have? We have one (it's a plug-in) in the upstairs hallway (which overlooks the downstairs). Do I need more than that?

I went and bought one Wednesday night and the instructions that came with it said you should have one on ever level of your house. I just bought one, mainly so that I could see if my place was safe to sleep in (although I'd been sleeping in it for many nights prior).

So if you have two floors, I guess you would need two detectors. HTHs!
