Symptoms of Dehydration

Does anyone else get really strange symptoms of dehydration?

Whenever I start to get dehydrated, my gums (at my lower front teeth) start to ache and I have an urge to cough that feels kind of like the cough reflex you get if you take a deep breath outside when it's super cold.  Usually, it takes almost a week of drinking as much water as I can manage for my symptoms to dissipate.  This episode was triggered by having 3 beers and then not much water afterward last Sunday.

Does anyone else get this?

wow..  i make sure i drink a ton of water everyday...  but if i do slack a bit, all i get is a bit of a dry mouth.  do you think that the beers caused all of these issues?  i just thought that drinking a few may make you thirsty the next day, but for 3 more days?  seems extreme to me for a few beers.  i wonder if it's something else?

I just get really thirsty and my mouth feels almost itchy. (hard to explain). I also get a tingling sensation in my limbs, and a headache. If I drink a large bottle of water these symptoms go away. I know people who hardly ever drink water. Are they just walking around dehydrated all the time??? Sometimes I am convinced alot of the people taking daily asprin, etc for headaches are really dehydrated.

I totally agree.  I have a coworker who never drinks water and drinks coffee all day and gets frequent headaches in the afternoon.  She comes into my office asking for Tylenol and I give it to her but I always tell her that she is more than likely dehydrated.  She doesn't listen though.  I realized this about the headaches when I was pregnant.  Pg women get dehydrated super easily, and if I didn't drink TONS of water every morning I'd get a headache in the afternoon.  I also have another strange symptom when I get dehydrated--this may be TMI but I start to get a urinary tract infection (I feel the burning-when-peeing sensation).  Usually it goes away if I guzzle water immediately.  Another thing that many people don't realize is that chocolate will dehydrate you because it has caffeine in it.  So will alcoholic drinks, caffeinated sodas (obviously), and even Advil.  Actually, I don't know if Advil has enough caffeine in it to dehydrate most people, but it has that effect on me.  It also keeps me up at night--I'm super sensitive to caffeine.

Anyway, sorry for the long ramble I just have a lot of experience w/ dehydration unfortunately--I've been hospitalized twice for severe dehydration (nausea, vomiting diarrhea)-it was awful!

OMG - kindred spirits!! Water is my miracle drug. For years I suffered from severe dehydration and never knew it. I always drank a TON of Coke - like a half gallon or more a day. And, I always had extremely chapped lips - it was gross. Tehn I was diagnosed with IBS (which I didn't ahve come to find out...) and had to stop drinking Coke. Once I did my IBS symptoms went away. I started drinking tons of H2) and all of a sudden I had more energy and no chapped lips!

Have you guys discovered SmartWater? Its the BEST!!!

I haven't heard of it but it sounds interesting.  What do you like about it?  I'm always looking for new drinks to try.

You know, people always tell me whenever I say that I'm tired or have a headache that it's because I'm dehydrated and I really don't think it's the case. I don't drink very much water normally (I drinks lots of other beverages all day long, just not that much plain water) but because of people suggesting that I was dehydrated I've gone through phases of giving up Diet Coke and for weeks at a time (I often drink a can a day) and of drinking at least the daily recommended amount of water and it's never made any difference. I'm like 95% sure that my headaches are due to allergies (they are usually tied to the weather and are almost always sinus headaches) and to sitting in front of a computer at work. It seems like my main problem is usually that I need to seriously try to decongest my nose and to take longer breaks from the computer. And start getting allergy shots again.

But anyway, when I get dehydrated it usually starts off with my mouth feeling dry and if it gets worse I feel kind of foggy and it often takes tons of drinking to quench my thirst.

LMonet does it help if you try to alternate drinking beer or alcohol with drinking water?

I'm sure it would help at least some.  But, I'm a bit of a lightweight so my stomach can only hold so much!  If I had been alternating, I doubt I'd have been able to finish my second beer if I'd done beer-water-beer.  And it was happy hour goshdarnit !  I was havin' me some $2.75 Guiness!

I think for me it's just a slippery slope - If I can keep myself very hydrated then it's not a problem.  But if I don't make a conscious effort to drink lots of water throughout the day and therefore develop a kind of hydration deficit, it's easier to go over the edge into dehydration.  Then to come back from being dehydrated, I not only have to drink what I normally should in a day but also enough to make up for the deficit I created.  Does that make sense?  That it takes sooooo much more water to un-dehydrate yourself than it would to maintain normal hydration in the first place ?

eight glasses of water a day is minimal, optimum health requires about a gallon of water a day.  (just straight water, best if room temp and not including iced tea or other watery beverages)

I get dehydrated easily, but it's never severe.  I tend to get dry cracked lips easily, which is a sign.  Another one for me is slight headache, I also have allergies and usually take an anti-histamine with decongestant, which alleviates the headache, but makes my body feel wired, thus the need for more water.  I do wonder sometimes if it's just a placebo effect, good thing I don't take any other meds anyway.

I very rarely drink anymore and now never more than two drinks, but when I did drink heavily I definitely noticed symptoms of dehydration afterwards, yes sometimes for a few days.  I have a lot of experience with hangovers and dehydration.  The key is to make sure you are very hydrated before you drink, and drink water in between drinks too.  This means lots of trips to the ladies room, but it will minimize a hangover, trust!  Your bladder will adapt to it too.

PrincessPink, yes, SmartWater is great stuff.

Oh my I do have to tell you that as a teen ager I dehydrated two times.  With me  it was ALMOST FAINTING OR PASSING OUT COULDNT STAND UP, HAD TO LAY DOWN AND  HAD TO STAY IN HOSPITAL WITH IV IN MY ARM [SUGAR WATER] FOR DAYS TO GET WELL.  AS I AM OLDER NOW, AND I DO DRINK ALOT OF WATER A DAY. A GALLON A DAY OR ALMOST THIS MUCH. IT IS A PART OF MY WAY OF LIFE.   IT IS ONE OF THE BEST THING YOU CAN DO FOR YOURSELF.
