Feel so lost!

I feel so lost!!!!!!! I am 22 years old and have been in the same community college for 4 years and what do I have to show. I first went under as a biology major, thinking that was the same thing to be a nurse, then two years ago I found out that a nursing major has totally different classes to take. So I finally finish my requirements for nursing this semester, but I waited to long and past the deadline. Now I am not sure if I want to do nursing. I though about majoring in Human Resources, because I figured it involved helping people, but other than that don't know much about the job. The pay, what it does, is it rewarding???

I love to help people, solve problems, love fashion, music, interested in law and medicine. I also get really inspired to help with people who suffer with child or sex abuse, mentally-ill patients. I mean they are so many things I love and interested in, but I have no direction. I just want to have a career and live my life. It just seems that I am so indecisive. Sorry for the vent.

Why is it you think you might not be interested in nursing any longer?

If you know longer think nursing is what you want, you shouldn't pursue it.  However, I'd encourage you to go with the nursing, if you think you would enjoy it.  My sister is in the medical field (pharmacist), and she's been telling me a bit about the shortage of medical professionals, particularly nurses.  I believe the pay is quite good these days.  Also, nursing is a field with a lot of opportunity for geographical movement.  Nurses are needed everywhere.  A friend of mine just graduated from nursing school and is preparing to head off to Africa to work with AIDS patients for the next year or so.

Hang in there, you'll figure it out.  I remember 22 as being a really hard year.  There are a lot of tough decisions to be made.

I guess I feel discouraged, and then when I hear "A+" students who don't get into nursing school, it makes me lose hope. Since I am not even close to that. How do I know if I am making the right choice???? What advisor or counsler can tell me this is the right career choice??? It justs make me feel so hopeless and stupid.

My mom is an RN and she loves it. There are lots of opprotunity there. You can work in an er, peds, psych, hospice, management.... It sounds to me like all of the things that you listed that you love could be covered here. It is a lot of work and difficult but everyone I know who has gone through the program are totally happy they did, mostly after it is over. Just a suggestion, if the program you are applying for is highly competitive for grades to get in find a school that used a lottery. I am In CA and my mom went to a school that accepted based on grades, but my cousin went to a school that was more of a lottery for those that met the basic qualifications. This school used that philosiphy that book smarts are important but a good nurse is not based soley on grades... I know I am going on and on but I feel your pain, been where you are(I still havent finished school, but I found a job that I love and can grow in). I am really encourageing the nursing as opposed to HR because I think that is not exactly what it sounds like these days. It is more paperwork and behind the sceens stuff. I know several people who do this type of work and hate it, they thought it would be different. I also know, in my area, jobs in this field are hard to come by. HR people are taking jobs as secrataries, bartenders, because they cannot find a job in that feild, this will never happen with nursing.  Sorry this is so long, Just my opinion and definitely do what you need to do to be happy. I just wanted to give you my perspective. I think you will be great at whatever you choose. You are young if you dont care for the degree you choose you can always try something else, and a backup never hurt anyone. I know you will find something you love.

Well, it sounds as if you haven't quite given up on nursing yet.  I would encourage you to think long and hard before going into another field.  I think nursing is a great field to be in--lots of variety and opportunity, and good money.  Nursing will be so much more rewarding (as well as draining--it is a tough job) than HR.

As for getting into nursing school, it is very competitive, and it would help a lot to have some experience as a nursing assistant or EMT, or at least some volunteer work in the field.

I was drawn to nursing too, but knew I could never do it, so I became a medical technologist and I work in the blood bank lab at a hospital.  This field does not pay nearly as well and usually does not have any patient interaction, but I still feel good knowing that I am helping patients.  There is a shortage of med techs, as in all medical fields, so hopefully the pay will go up soon.  PM me if you would like more information.  I will tell you all I can.

You will figure it out, promise!  My mother has been an RN for 30 years at a Children's Hospital and works with mostly kids from foster homes and from abusive and alcoholic families.  My advice if you go with Nursing is to go with it all the way, definitely get a Bachelors degree, otherwise you might suffer some burnout and lack of appreciation.  Not every nurse (and I am not talking about lpn, only rn) loves what they do, it's tough work with low pay, even though it is a tremendous service for the community.

A degree in Biology can lead in so many different directions, you sound interested in Health or at least you want to do something you will be an expert at/be passionate about and you are probably willing to enter a masters program, have you considered Nutrition and Dietary Science?  Maybe you are interested in Psychology....like Marriage and Family Counseling?  Have you considered medical school?  You are still so young, you can take your interests so far right now!  Don't settle for the quick answer just so you can say you have it figured out right now.

Whew!!!! Thanks girls!!!!!!! I talked to my dad and he gave me the same reassurance and support that you gals have given me. On friday I will go talk to my counsler or advisor and see what they suggest. Since I have finished my pre-reqs. my dad suggested I perhaps I retake the classes that I did not do so well on. Which turns out to be just two.

Lorelei: It sounds what your mom does is what I would be interested in doing. Especially since I have such a strong interest in working with foster, or abusive children and families.

I am going to keep going, and perhaps I should take the pre-reqs. courses so that I may apply to a nursing school that offers it towards a bachelors.

Thanks girls!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
