That's so funny you mention it. I started to grow an avocado pit about a month ago and so far no sign of a sprout. It developed a big crack in it, so something must be happening, but it's taking so long! How long did it take yours to sprout?
Maybe mine isn't getting enough sun... did you put yours on a windowsill?
what did you do to it? Put it in water like a school project (that's what it reminded me of)?? That sounds like fun! I am always up for something new, so tell us how it works.
So cool.
ETA: I hate to sound stupid, but does it really grow avocados?

Oh god...this brings back (bad)memories...my estranged husband was forever trying to get these things to grow. Every time I made salsa I had to give him the pit...we had pots of dirt lying everywhere on the patio. Ugh!
Haha!! That totally reminded me of the Felicity season 1 Thanksgiving episode where Felicity gives Noel her avocado seed to watch while she is at home.

Another reason to be glad you dumped him: he didn't know (or bother to find out) that they will only sprout in water.
Laken, I think the best way is to stick toothpicks into it, then put it in a mason jar with the water covering at least part of the seed. My friend grew an enormous plant from one when we were in seventh grade. Ah, memories!

Hey, thanks, I'd have sticked it in the ground ... I'll try this evening putting it in a jar with water. Or may be with damp cotton?

Here is what i did I washed and rubbed a little with my hand to get the avocado off than put about three or four tooth picks in somewhere in the milddle of seed. It can be put in a window with light point side up in a small glass of water. A good trick is to put a little charcoal in the water to keep it sweet I can't remember just how long it takes to sprout Weeks i am sure when you see the roots growing in glass this is the time i put it in a good poting soil. The seed will crack open and after a while it will sprout. keep it moist and after mine was in dirt for over a month in house than I put it out side so it could get more sun. Mine is under a tree I do have to tell you I forgot about it after I put it outside. I was doing yard work and saw it. I was sooooo happy so lady's good luck if you want to try growing one.
