practicality vs want

I have been admiring this gorgeous pink confection of a coat for quite awhile (see pic below)  It is a good price and I am thinking of getting it with some Christmas money I am getting for Christmas.  However, now that the time is approaching to actually get the coat, I find myself second guessing it.  While I think it is unique and beautiful as ever, I am asking myself how much I would actually wear it (not alot--I live in south Alabama) and when I did wear it, would I actually leave it on long enough for it to matter.  I only wear coats from car into work and the car into church.  If it is particularly chilly at work or church I will leave them on, but the ruffle on the front of this coat (one of the main reasons I like it) makes me think it might not be comfortable to leave it on.  I want it, but I am thinking that the money might be better spent on something that is more practical and that I will get more wear out of.  What do you think?

For me, it really depends on how much YOU love it.  If you can't stop thinking about it, then you will relish the times you wear it.  If you are second-guessing yourself already it may be better to pass.  I have a closet full of shoes in that category.  Beautiful, had to have them, but don't fit the reality of my life, so they hardly get worn.  I try now to look more for awesome stuff that I KNOW I will wear.  There are a few items though, that make me feel so special when I pull them out of the closet, that they were worth it

To me it would all depend on how much $$$ you are talking about and how much of a bite an item like this would put in my clothing budget. If it's a cheap thrill, I say why not? You love it and have been thinking about it for a while. But if it's a significant investment (such as this will be THE coat that you will wear for years and years) I would pass. Anything that I have to shell big buck out for is something that I want to be timeless and I think that with the color and ruffle detail it would get old rather quickly.

I have a JCrew long winter coat that I paid around $300 for 9 years ago. It's still in great condition and it's my go to winter coat when I need something dressy or when it's really cold out. Now this purchase was a huge chunk of my budget back then, but I've more than gotten my money out of it by now. I also have a winter white coat that I bought 3 years ago at a BR outlet store for around $70. It's pretty and I only wear it for best. I didn't mind buying a second coat because the price was right for what limited use I'd get out of it.

It is gorgeous and it's haunting you. I say buy it because I have a feeling you'll love it for years.

ITA.  If I can go to bed and think of an item in the morning with the same lust, I will not regret that purchase.  It looks like a pretty classic coat.

I agree with D, and Xtina made another good point about the coat's classic look. Aside from the ruffle, it has a familiar shape. That will help you love it even more and for a longer period of time!

It's pretty, but if it's just hanging in your closet looking pretty, I don't see the fun in that.

Thanks everyone. I am a seamstress and I am thinking about trying to replicate it, but I don't know about that ruffle. I will keep all your thoughts in mind. Thanks for taking the time to help me.

Wow! You can make a coat? If you do try it, I for one would love to see it. I think anyone who can actually make their own clothes is awesome.  aww
