Need to vent... got rear ended this AM!
Permalink Closed

hey ladies, i know i haven't been posting much lately, it's because i've been so busy w/ work & school work.  anyways, this morning on the way to work i got rear ended.  i've been in accidents before, but i was just wondering... should i wait for his insurance to contact me or report it to my insurance?  i seem to remember that even if i am not at fault, my insurance will still go up if i have an accident on my record w/ them.  i know once this lady backed into me & i never had to lift a finger, before i knew it i got a check in the mail!  her insurance took care of everything and then some!  they came to my apartment for the appraisal (didn't make me get my own) and it went very smoothly!  anyways, anyone have any recs?  i got ALL his info plus took pics.  i don't forsee a problem w/ him, he was really nice.  also, would it be presumptuous of me to get checked out by a doc?  i had to go to a chiro for 2 months after i was involved in a really bad accident and i am a big believer in it now.  but i also don't want to go to one i don't know (the one i went to before is a family friend who i trust, but he's over an hour away & i just don't have time for that) and have him tell me a bunch of BS just to cash in.  i just want an x-ray by someone who will not just be looking for broken bones (like the hospital).

I used to work for State Farm Ins, so maybe I can help out a little bit.  Even though it's clearly not your fault, you should still call your insurance company and report it.  What if the guy turned out to screw you over or something?  You'd want your insurance company to have it on file just in case.  If the accident was not your fault, and this man's insurance company pays to fix your car, your insurance will not go up at all.  The only time your insurance is raised if it was your fault, or if it wasn't your fault, but your damage exceeds what their cap is.  My BF got in an accident last summer, and it wasn't his fault, and the guy who hit him had no insurance.  State Farm paid to fix his car and did not raise his rates, since he was not at fault.  Also, I would definitely go get checked out by a doctor.  You never know if you're going to have neck pain or problems later on.  Go get x-rayed and send the bill to this guy's insurance company - they should take care of that too.  I know when I got rear- ended, the person's insurance company fixed my car, gave me a rental car and paid my doctor's bills.  If he has reputable insurance, they should do the same.  If you have any more questions, feel free to ask or PM me.  I hope this helps a little and made sense

You're very welcome.  Who does this person have for insurance?  Who do you have?  If you want, PM me.

I'm so sorry about your accident, but glad everyone is ok. I'm not an insurance expert (and I think shopchicago pretty much said it all) but I do have something to say. I got rear-ended a few weeks ago (four weeks tomorrow) and it's still not settled. We waited almost two weeks for the insurance company of the girl who hit me to contact us before we finally called them. They said they'd come to my house to assess the damages, but we contacted a collision shop, who suggested that we get an estimate there first. They deemed my car totalled and said we'd better leave my car with them, they gave me a rental, and contacted the insurance company (to make sure they wouldn't yank my chain and say my car is drivable, since I'd been driving it). We were supposed to wait for the insurance company to contact us and make us an offer on my car... it's been over two weeks, no call. We are calling them if they don't call by Wednesday. I'm not meaning to high jack your thread, I just want to warn you that it may not run so smoothly (though mine is the worst case I've heard of).... or maybe I'm just angry , so you might just want to ignore me . I do think you should get yourself checked out, especially if you've had pain before. I could be wrong, but I thought that if you've had pains in your neck/back from an accident, they're likely to come back if it happens again. Even if not, it'll make you feel better for someone to tell you you're ok.

Ok, when I got rear-ended, the person who hit me had Farmer's and they were great!  Like I said, they contacted me, paid for my car repairs and let me take the car where I wanted, paid for a rental car, and paid my doctor bills.  Good luck, but I think you'll be fine!
