I bought my first pair of premium jeans this weekend (gulp!) and I love them but need them hemmed. I keep hearing the term original hem where I assume the tailor reattaches the original hem after s/he's shortened the lenth of the leg but wanted to make sure. Also, does this present any problems with wear and tear?

i'm not sure about original hem. but i know if you tell the tailor that you want a jean hem, they will give you the standard hem that they use for denim.
the nordstrom people call it "tricky hem" (which i think is hilarious) and i get all my jeans done this way. i haven't had any issues with wear and tear and some of my jeans are over 4 years old.

I am so happy you asked this question. I have never heard of this type of hem and now I can get the Antiks I have been wanting (whenever I save enough money). I had been wondering how I would not lose that hem at the bottom with the thread on it.
i actually did this hem to a pair of jeans about 3 years ago. it turned out really good and it's held up fine. i was so proud that i figured it out on my own... but please don't ask me to explain how to do it.
Yeah, it is usually called an original hem, any decent tailor can do it. Here's a tutorial if your DIY... http://www.figandplum.com/archives/Hemming%20Jeans%20Like%20a%20Pro.doc
