Since I have been put an a budget I can't shop as much as I'd like to and I have to make better shopping choices. But I find it very difficult to choose items based on want vs need. The things I want are so much more appealing (ie: new makeup, jewelry, pretty skirts) as opposed to the things I need (ie: winterboots, mittens, new bra). The needs seem so boring that I can't get excited about shopping for them. I have been trying to convince myself that the needs are more important but i can't say its working very well.
Do you guys have a strategy for shopping for wants vs needs? Should needs always come first, regardless?
i put myself on a pretty strict shopping budget each month. sometimes 2 months in a row go by where all i purchase are the "needs". they are dull, yes... but after the needs are taken care of it's extra exciting to be able to purchase some "wants".
personally i am just coming off of a month of "wants" and i'm going into a month of "needs". i'm not that excited about it, but it'll pass.
i think it's really important to take care of your needs as soon as you pinpoint the need. that way you aren't kicking yourself when it's 20 degrees out and you are mittenless and winterbootless. afterall, makeup and jewelry won't keep you warm.
i agree with hotcocoa. while buying needs is boring, i've found that it helps me enjoy my wants more. ime a lot of the things i need are basics, and they help me get more use out of the wants.
