Pity party for me....

Ok, this is a completely self-indulgent wallow but I am SO PISSED OFF! I think I have broken my toe. (Yes, you can laugh).

Now, many of you know that I have been laid low recently due to some surgery (nothing major, just one of those things - it's gyno in nature so I won't go into detail). I was bummed because I've recently been getting back into my running after having chronic issues with illiotibial band sydrome that kept me off the trails for almost a year, off and on. I have lost so much of my conditioning that it made me super bummed. SO in September I had really managed to ramp back up - finally able to run 4-5 miles without having to walk (which had been so humbling for someone who used to knock out 10 miles on a Saturday "for fun.") I kept an exercise diary and figure that I either ran or did some sort of exercise (weekend hiking, etc)most of the days in Sept. Anyway, after making all of that progress in September I had my surgery 2 weeks ago and had to lay low for two weeks.

So today was to be my first exercise in 2 weeks, a long hike (maybe 3-4 hours). Last night, to ensure I felt my best, I ordered a pizza and stayed home - not even a drop of wine! And what do I do on the way to the bathroom? I take the corner from my kitchen into my bathroon too wide and SLAM my left foot into the wall, stubbing my 3 smallest toes on my left foot (pinky and her 2 neighbors). $%!@#!?! So I stand there exhaling for 10 seconds waiting for the pain to stop... and it doesn't. I suddenly realize that one of my toes feels quite fucked up. The toe proceeds to get hot and red. Over the next couple of hours, a bruise forms on the inside of the toe and it swells. I apply ice and elevate it. I sleep with my foot on a pillow. But every time I wake up during the night I realize it still hurts. Today it is one sad little piggy. There is a bruise at the base of the toe and the toe itself is all mottled, slightly swollen and bruised. Luckily, though, it is not misshapen or pointing in the wrong direction - it is the same shape as usual. And I can move it normally, albeit with pain. Touching it, there is nowhere it hurts sharply, it just hurts in a general way. I am thinking it is either badly sprained (a sprained toe.. that is so pathetic) or I have cracked it, but not a clean break. It hurts to walk, though not to stand. I can pinpoint the area of pain to the joint closest to my toenail - maybe I hyperextended it when I stubbed it?

Broken or sprained, there really isn't much to do for a small toe (second to smallest). There isn't even a good reason to go to the Dr - they just tell you to rest, ice, and put it up. They can take an x-ray, but frankly it is sort of a waste of money if the end result is the same (I have insurance, but still there is a deductable).

So it is 70+ degrees and GORGEOUS outside. I can't hike and getting back to running this week as planned is looking doubtful. And I am going to Kauai in a week and feel fat, not to mention that I planned to hike a lot while there. ARGH!!!!! I am so depressed. And if my toe really is screwed up, think of the ugly shoes I will have to wear for the next few weeks! Maybe I'll buy some moccasins.

I guess this gives me a chance to do my yoga DVD and maybe ride the exercise bike. But MAN - the setback with my running really pisses me off.

Wah!!! Why me???

Oh DC-so sorry!!! Don't you hate it when something so stupid lays you up especially when you try to get back into shape-guess it goes to show toes, as much as we hate them, are pretty important!  I don't think you can do anything for a little toe-my mom dropped a can on hers in the grocery store (in sandals) and I think she broke it too.  Hope you recover soon and that it won't hinder you on your trip...have a great trip!

oh dc, i know how you feel and i really empathize.  i too have been in exercising "grooves" and then something would happen.  it's the worst to feel like you've made so much progress then to have something out of your control happen to put you back at square one.  this has happened to me twice.  once i was running about five miles a day consistently.  i had built a ton of muscle and felt like it was an addiction.  i loved running (i never thought i would feel that way), but then i was hospitalized with a kidney infection.  i was so upset to know that i would be benched.  two weeks later i thought i would be up for it, then i went to the doctor for a check up and she said i had mono.  needless to say i took about a 3 (maybe more like 5) month hiatus.  i just got so depressed not having the energy to run, and realizing that i had "lost" everything i had gained as far as running.  then recently i was just starting my exercise kick again, after i had found a balance with work/sleep, and i got hit by a car when i was riding my bike.  ughhh.  it's was sooo frustrating!  i've started again and while it's slightly depressing to be starting from sqaure one again, it's nice to know that eventually it will come back (i've stopped and started about three times and it has always come back).

anyway, i just wanted you to know that i know how frustrating it can be, but don't get TOO discouraged, it will come back.  maybe in the meantime try pilates or try to lift some weights?  ( free weights).

also, i hope everything worked out with your surgery, i'm sorry you had to go through that.

take care and use this as an excuse to buy some cute flats!

that sucks. I've broken a toe before, and it hurts. I am sorry!

oh, man... that sucks!

one thing you can do (beside what you are doing with elevating it) is use the other toes as splints with tape (yes, I know they're bashed too - but I have smashed so many toes (including all three at once)).

wah! such bad timing!!!

DC, I am so sorry! That really really really sucks. Really sucks. I too can emphathize, b/c I've broken many toes (and it totally hurts) and was also unable to exercise for almost a year due to health issues and getting back into shape is soooo tough.

And I know you know this, but you will get back to where you were, and then you'll get even better, and this bump in the road won't seem quite as bad then. I would (as you said) take the time to focus on the non-cardio aspects of your fitness (yoga or pilates would be great).

Get well soon!

I'm a toe-wacker, so I can totally sympathize with your pain.  I, however, am always looking for a good reason to sit on my butt and to not have to do a damn thing.  But I would think you should be able to go on your hikes still.  I think you could get some of that athletic tape and just tape your toes together (at least the last 3 toes).
