Next week is Spirit Week at my school, and so Monday is "Costume Day" (aka Halloween, but we can't have Halloween anymore, so it's "Costume Day" instead. Whatev.).Anyhoo, my students suggested that I go as an "emo kid." For those of you not blessed to be a teenager, or know one, here's a fun definition: http://newshound.de.siu.edu/online/stories/storyReader$4534
I don't want to buy any new clothes for this, so my sister Cali is dressing me -- any suggestions on what I can wear from my very non-emo closet? We were thinking dark cropped jeans and ballet flats to start, plus a studded belt. Suggestions? I am a teacher, so I need to stay school-appropriate.
Any thoughts on accessories? I was thinking I need emo glasses for sure.
And finally, does anyone know of a temporary hair dye I can use to streak my hair pink or purple? My hair is currently very light, so I'd like it to (please) wash out quickly.
Any suggestions are appreciated. Since this costume will be seen by "real" emos, I am going for authenticity (with a little mockery ).

i believe "Phyto" has color hair gel that you can use to put pieces in it. otherwise, i am sure FP will see your post and add what she used to put the pink strips in her hair. "Phyto" is carried by Sephora.
If only you lived nearby, I could strip accessories from all my friends' closets. Sigh.
I think you can buy the hair-striping stuff at Ulta in several colors, if you have an ulta nearby.
I agree with Katrina that Hot Topic would be a good place for accessories. Maybe a simple black grommeted snap-on bracelet and some of those rubber plastic bracelets? I would keep it simple, since aren't "real" emo kids light on accessories? On top, I would wear either a faux-vintage message tee or a band tee. (Perhaps slightly less authentic, but more work-appropriate.) Could you get one at a thrift so it's completely paper-thin with holes in it (and then wear it askew to show your emaciated tummy? - just kidding)
Be sure to paint your nails black and then scratch some of it off.

Hmm...thinking of my boss' son.....wear the belt low slung. He does long sleeved tees with tight t-shirts over them. Or do you have a too-small or too-short cardigan?
Maybe check the kids sections and wear an Elmo t-shirt or something? I agree Hot Topic would be a good place to check out.
first of all, wear your hair in low pigtails and see if you can find (like at hot topic) a $4 or $5 pair of black rimmed glasses - a MUST for emo kids!
if you have a messenger bag, wear that all day - ugh it's killing me that i'm not near you, i'd give you some buttons to put all over it
emo kids like to embrace prep but rock it out a little bit - so you could get away with a popped-collar polo as long as you do the studded belt -
does your sister have chucks? you should wear chucks with striped or mismatched socks
lots of eyeliner
lip gloss
emmm
hm
i think that's it for now
i like the black nail polish thing
oh yeah lots of those rubber bracelets from the 80s (also available very cheap at hot topic)
I do have some Chucks... pink ones, though. Do girl emos wear pink? My students suggested some clip-on hair pieces in black instead of striping my hair, because the emos here are currently doing black/blonde mixes in their hair -- thoughts?
Oh, and I can be a poseur-emo if I want. Most of the kids here are, according to the "real" emos.

wear jeans, a tshirt, a studded belt...but not through the belt loops! really low slung with the buckle on the side. a bunch of black rubber bracelets. definitely vans or chucks, if you go to hot topic pick up a few band buttons & pin them on your shirt.
I also don't have anything to contribute (apparently, I'm old bec. I don't know what an emo kid is). so sad. anyway, HB, pretty please post a pic of you on Costume Day. can't wait to see it!

you could also write the names of your "boyfriend" (or ok, maybe your dogs and your hubby) in pen on the backs of your hands and doodle a little. on you chuck taylors, too, as maddie said.
chucks and really tight jeans, eyeliner, wear your hair in your eyes, low slung belt, ripped concert tee, messenger bag, striped scarf, and walk pigeontoed
thanks again, guys! Cali & I did a trial run last night. It turned out sort of "emo-lite" because I couldn't spend much $$$. And it's sort of an emo/scenester mix, because we were aiming for a look that reminds me of most of the kids I see everyday. So it's a little girlier than your typical girl emo.
For reference, here's a recent picture of me. This is me, normally:
and this is emo-bird -- any last-minute suggestions? I definitely need more lipgloss, and paler face makeup (I don't have any makeup on in this pic except eyeshadow)
here's a closeup:

It's so unfair - even dressed up all "emo," you still look gorgeous! LOL...
It's funny because i read your post yesterday and then went to urban outfitters and saw all these kids and was like, "Oooooohhh! They're emo! I get it!" I am such a fuddy-duddy.
So when boys wear nail polish, like blue or whatever, is that also an emo thing?
