The big benefit dinner I'm going to at the Four Seasons tonight is going to be "business dress."  My FIL's secretary just let me know.  So I can't wear the gorgeous dress I bought!

What do you think about something similar to this (well, besides that it's boring):

similar, but fitted 3/4 sleeves & no "shrug" to shoulders

 same color/style, but regular waistband

They look like satin in person and will be hidden under the wide leg of the pants

White Freshwater Round Pearl 16" Necklaceor should I do a colored necklace?  I'm trying to look "business" whatever that is.  Girls in the business world might can help a girl out!

And would a similar belt be to "hooker?"  I have one I bought for Halloween at F21 that I couldn't return (sidenote:  grrrr).  It's similar to this but the stones are clear and the tie part is white satin ribbon.  I think I need a belt of some sort, but my only other option that I have is a black satin tie belt.

What do you think of this??????  I'll leave in 2.5 hours!!!!!!

I would wear the black ribbon belt, and maybe some dangly earrings instead of the necklace to make it feel a little more 'special'?

no sparkle belt.  maybe the black satin one, or even without a belt i think you will be fine.  i agree with lmonet--dangly earring would be pretty with the neckline of the top.  you are going to look great--don't worry!

Could you dress down the dress? Does that make sense??

business dress!?!? why the hell didn't they give that up in the first place?

If someone told me business dress, I would wear a suit. I feel like you need a jacket with the current combo... I also like the other girls' suggestions - with a belt and dangly earrings.

No.  It's even fancier in person:

I spoke to my MIL.  She said that only the "older" business people would be in suits.  I do have a black pinstripe shrunken-ish jacket I could wear if needed.  I haven't worked in over 3 years, so I don't have "business dress" clothes!

Hey, what about thelong gauchos I originally bought?  What could I wear w/ those?  I still don't know what to do w/ my hair, either.

dammit

That is a beautiful dress. I am bummed for you. I think the long gauchos would be better than the grey pants. Even though this is "business" I think you should still go kind of flowy. What about all black with the colored necklace and satin belt?

yeah - well I dress for this type of stuff fairly often. if she goes to a lot of functions like this, then maybe she has more experience and knows better than me.  in my experience, dress code does not have age variations.

Personally, I would try the jacket on with the above ensamble - I think it might look good

I agree with Detroit - try on the jacket and see how it looks.  You can always take it off at the actual event if things look a little more relaxed when you get there.  IMO the gauchos would be much too casual for 'business attire'.

You don't have a shift dress or a straight skirt, Missmee

Not anymore!  I have a short, straight black skirt but no hose to wear & I'm white as a sheet!  I have a cute short skir w/ flattened out pleats along the bottom I could wear w/ tights, but that hardly seems very business dress.  I have dresses for weddings in the spring and summer.  I have cord skirts, prairie skirts, and skirts w/ sequin embellishments that are good for going to Broadway shows.  But I have absolutely no "no nonsense" business attire.

I reiterate....... dammit.

ugh - I would be totally pissed!

seriously - try on the black top with the grey pants, pearl necklace, and shoes you have shown with the pinstripe jacket.

what belts do you have (besides the rhinestone one)? do you have any cool earrings you could swap out for the necklace?

The pictures turned out dark.......

Here's the top, pants, heels, satin belt, and pearls (lord, you can't see anything!):

Here's the same w/ the jacket and belt tied over the jacket:

Or no pearls and earrings #1 (gold w/ raspberry jewels):

Earrings #2 (gold & aurora borealis stones):

Earrings #3 (gold w/ pink and yellowish green stones):

What's the fave:  outfit 1, outfit 2, or either of those w/ any earring combo 1, 2, or 3?

I really feel your pain missmee - I had an interview monday & didn't even have black pants or a black skirt - I have streamlined my closet into casual & I was just lucky I had just bought a blazer or I don't know what I would have done. I'll comment after i see pixs. Just wanted you to know you aren't alone

it's hard to see in the pics, but i think i like the second outfit best--someone mentioned that you can always wear the jacket and then if it's more casual when you get there, take it off.  i like the third pair of earrings the best.

outfit #2 (with the pearl necklace)

the gold chandeliers are not speaking to me with the black/grey - If you do earrings instead of a necklace, I would opt for silver or black tone.
