Christmas crafts

I am organizing a children's Christmas party to take place in early December. There will be 20-30 kids there ranging in age from toddler to 1st, 2nd grade.  They need something to do before Santa gets there.  We don't have a ton of money to spend on the craft, so I'm looking for creative ideas to keep little hands busy.  Any suggestions?  Maybe you can remember what you did when you were little.  I'm having a meeting with the committee next week, so I need ideas soon so I can figure out what supplies we'll need and the cost of each craft.

One thing that popped into my head this morning was making wrapping paper.  The kids could take a sheet of plain white or brown craft paper and stamp or draw on it to make wrapping paper to wrap their parents gifts in.  What do you think?

I do this one with my borther every year (they are in that age range) and they love it!

Paper Gingerbread Men:

on paper grocery bags (the brown kind), fold accordian style and trace around a gingerman cookie cutter- cut it out paper doll chain style. Each kids gets one chain of men and you can decorate them with either crayons, markers or fabric paints (the kind that come in the tube with the tiny tip- just squeeze directly on to the paper to dray with it). They are really easy and fun (the older kids can get pretty creative- one of my brothers last year decorated one to look like "Blue" from Blue's Clues!) and they make a really cute decoration. We sit them on a branch od our tree.

I do the wrapping paper thing with my daughter every year she loves to make it and she loves even more to give her gifts wrapped in it.  Another idea, Oriental Trading company www.orientaltrading.com has some great simple craft kits you can buy by the dozen for really good prices.  There is a great selection of crafts, ornamnets, frames, etc...

I think the wrapping paper idea is great. I want to do it!! Also, decorating round styrofoam balls to make tree decorations might be fun!! And twisting pipe cleaners to make candy canes. Will you have time to bake cookies?? Ohh, I want to come!!

Make those reindeer ornaments out of close pins.  My parents still have that ornament.  I will try to post instructions.

Well, you're all invited!  It's actually our squadron's Christmas party.  We always have one of the guys (usually one w/o kids so he doesn't freak his out, or give it away), dress up as Santa, and taxi in on an F-16 with presents for all the kids there.  Mrs. Claus walks all the kids out to where they park the jets and they all watch him taxi in.  We tell them that Rudolph was sleeping or something, and he had to fly in from the North Pole.  My husband did it one year when our oldest was little, and she liked it until he spoke and she got really freaked out.  Our kids are too old now for him to do it.  Should be fun.

Thanks for the suggestions.  I'll let you know what I decide on, but keep 'em coming!

I remember reindeer candycanes.  Brown pipe cleaners, jiggly eyes, and little red or black pom pom for a nose.
