Is this dress too summery?
Permalink Closed

I am going on a rehearsal dinner boat ride this weekend. Until today I thought it would be kind of fancy and had a fancy outfit planned, but today I was talking to the bride and it sounds like I need to wear something a little more casual. I have zero time for shopping, so I'm sitting at work trying to think about what I already have in my closet that might fit the bill. FWIW, the bride will be wearing a printed Betsey Johnson dress and the groom will be wearing jeans and a button-down (as will SO, probably).

I have this dress, but is it too summery? Will I look silly? It's cotton and until now I've considered it a "sundress" but I'm kind of hoping the fall-ish colors can make it work even though it's now mid-September. According to weather.com, the low will be in the mid-60s that evening.

I was thinking I'd wear it with a cardigan or a wrap over my shoulders and dark red heels (or maybe black heels, if the cardi/wrap I pick is black, just to tie it together). Thoughts?

(Worst case scenario, I'll default to a cardi and a pencil skirt, but I'm afraid that's too businessy and not party-y!)

I don't think it's too summery at all. The colors are very fall like and a throw or cardi on top would help make it season appropriate. And it is only September after all.

I'm not sure I dig black with it though. Do you have a mustard cardi/throw? There seems to be a little in the dress.

To be honest I'm not thrilled with the idea of wearing black with it either, but I don't have a lot of other choices in my closet right now, at least in silhouettes that would work with a dress.

The absolute only shopping I can do before we leave is I can sneak a peek in Walmart tonight when I stop in to the pharmacy (I know Walmart is evil but their Rx prices are so good...) (but I'm not having much luck finding anything on the Walmart website anyway) or I can run into Target because it's also on my way home. At Target, I found this:

Do you think that's better than black, or still kind of "eh"?

ETA: I also just remembered that I have a dark red knit shawl in my desk at work that I can bring home. The red is a little different from the accents on the dress, and also a different shade than my red shoes (which I was hoping to be able to use since I'm also wearing them to the wedding, and I'm trying to pack light-ish) but not tooo different that I think it would be a big deal on a half-lit boat. It's kind of like this shape, but obviously can be tied differently because I don't think I would knot it on my boobs like this.

Personally I would go with what I already owned as opposed to buying something last minute out of "panic". I think the different shades of red will work since boat lighting will be low. Nobody will notice and that's one less thing you have to pack.

I like the idea of brown or olive with it.  I think that brown wrap with the red shoes would look really good and seasonally appropriate.

Thanks, Boots and D! I ended up totally forgetting to stop at Target between all my other errands tonight, but I did try my dress on with the red thing I have and it actually looked a lot better than I thought it would. Still might be a bit much with the red shoes too, but for having to change my outfit at the last minute I think it looks pretty darn good! BUT I am glad to hear this does not look too summery! I don't know what I would have done otherwise - I don't have many kinda-casual-kinda-dressy-autumn dresses!

Do you have nude heels? They might work better than the red ones if you're unsure of all the red accents.

In my opinion - looks good & place appropriate. Just have a shaul with you.

Have a great time!

I'd like it with nude shoes and maybe a brown cardi.  Not feeling balck with it
