Does stress make your vision worse?
Permalink Closed

I've noticed that my eyes seem to have gotten worse over the past year. I've worn contacts for ages and haven't had a prescription change in about 10 years.  Now, I feel like I do.  I've been under extreme amounts of stress and I know that it can do weird things to your body, so I was just wondering if that was one of those weird things.

Hmm, I suppose stress raises your blood pressure quite a bit and that can do a number on your eyes.  If your daily computer time has increased in the last year or so, that can definitely have an effect.

I doubt stress itself causes your eyesight to worsen, but I'm thinking that it's actually 1) being under fluorescent lights at work and 2) looking at a computer screen all day that are causing your vision problems.  I'd bet that those are what's causing it and the fact that you're stressed as well is just coincidental.  But regardless of what's causing it, you should see your eye doctor to rule out anything more serious.

I do stare at a computer screen a lot more now than I used to, so I suppose that good do it. Someday, when I have insurance again, I'll spend a week going to different doctors and dentists for all of those fun check-ups!

I got awful eyestrain at my current HellJob because the cube furniture was situated in a way that I had to keep the monitor too close to my face.  If you stare at a monitor all day at work, try to keep it farther away from your face.  It will help with eyestrain and other nasty stuff monitors can do to your vision.  Get a glareguard, too.  Your employer should pay for it, but if they don't, I think you can get one for under $10.
