Could I substitute sesame oil for . . .

vegetable oil?  the recipe I have calls for only 1 TBS of veg. oil and I don't have any.  I'm on peapod right now shopping and wondering if I should get some or if the sesame oil would do.  Please help--I'm completely clueless about this stuff!  Thanks!

You could substitute sesame oil, depending on the recipe. If it's a baked good like muffins, it might really alter the taste.

Sometimes I will substitute melted Crisco for veg oil, or melted margarine or butter. It all depends on the recipe. Baked goods can be picky about substitutions sometimes. Oh, and sometimes people use applesauce instead of veg. oil when they're making cake or muffins.

Well, it just depends on what you're making.  If it is an asian dish, it could work.  I can't imagine sesame oil in cakes or cookies, though.  It has a very distinct taste.  I second the idea of Crisco or applesauce.  Olive oil could work too.  What are you making?

Thanks, girls.  It's for a dish called "brown rice royale"--really just a brown rice side dish.  (with mushrooms and chives).  I got the veg. oil after reading your responses just in case!
