My parents are keeping it at no more than 68. My "suite" (I have a bedroom/living room deal) is in the basement, and I have a seperate thermostat that I can control. They want me to keep it at 70, but right now I have it at 72 . I'm freeeezing!

I have a rule- no heat until Novemeber 1st. No matter what the temp. SO informed me he turned on the heat for a bit today while I was not here. Harumph. I prefer to suck the heat of other tenants for as long as possible.

If I'm cold, on it goes.  It doesn't matter what time of the year it is.  Right now it's 73 degrees inside and 64 degrees outside.  When the heater is on, it can get up to 80!  At my new house it is set at 68, too cold for me, but at least I can snuggle up to the gas fireplace.

In the summer I keep the air on 70. But in the winter we rarely turn the heater on at all. The only exception was the few times that it hit 19 or 20 degrees here. Other than that, I wear lots of warm pjs, sock, slippers, and cover up, even on the couch. Thank goodness we agree on this - I swear I think it would be a deal breaker for me in a relationship! I HATE the central heat thing - it dries me out & makes me sick.

ETA: we don't have gas but the reports are that our electric costs are going to increase by 25% as well. We are on equalized billing, so doing it this way evens out or usage so we don't have a $500 cooling bill & a $50 bill during winter months.

how do you equalize bills? is that the thing the company does where they split the bill up for you each month automatically?

i ended up breaking out the space heater b/c i didn't want to turn my heat on for one day. it's working pretty well. it's funny b/c when i lived at home my mom always used to yell at me for leaving the lights on, or turning the heat up so i could wear shorts in the house. now that i pay my own bills, i understand why.

Yes, the equalized billing is done by our electric company. They take your yearly usage & average it out for you. It's truly the only reason I haven't switched to another competing company!

I know what you mean by paying your own vs being at home - I HATE this bill. And water. I've always lived in apartments so I didn't realize how much water is - ridiculous! I mean really, I'd rather be buying shoes!

we will be making a lot of fires and using space heaters, wearing a sweater, etc. to try to keep the heat at 68.

I agree. Space heaters are great, as long as they are the energy efficient ones.
