Make up color - how do you decide?
Permalink Closed

This may be more appropriate in the beauty section, but not really sure.

How do you decide what shade of makeup you are going to wear? I was taught that if you wear cool colors, you wear cool makeup, warm colors, warm makeup - or neutral with either. So i have a standard look (eye shadows & blush basically) in those families & rotate. I put on whatever color lipstick I'm feeling that day & that happens to be in the bottom of my purse - I have about a trillion lipsticks / glosses as well.

WELL - I have about every color eye shadow known to man. But I never ever use those other colors because quite frankly I'm too lazy to take the time to try something new. But I'm sick of my make up looks - I want something new - I'm stuck in a rut!

Made me wonder what everyone else does? Do you mix it up? Always use the same? Suggestions? Websites for inspiration?

Here is my general looks:

warm
or with

use this all the time when i want to go silver or smokier

Yay!  It's all Mary Kay!  Wahoo!

Ok, back the subject...I have NO system...I just put on whatever color I am feeling like that day...so long as it doesn't clash.  And I break the dont' wear the same color eyeshadow/top rule all the time.

i often wonder about this too...

personally, i have basics that i know work and use those when i don't feel like thinking or i'm in a rush - a pale frosty pink that looks almost like no shadow (i'll just cover my whole lid), a goldy one that's good for summer...

i try not to match my eyeshadow to my clothes (for example - today i have on purple & pink, which are my "best" eyeshadow colors.  but i don't want to be too barney, so i'm wearing mossy green eyeshadow with a little purple blended in - it looks pretty cool).

i wear cool colors no matter what my clothes are (though, i realize, most of my clothing are cool colors too) because my coloring just doesn't work with warmer shades.  i always end up hating my makeup when i try to do warm colors.  because i'm so pale and have such a pink tone, it just doesn't work.

did that help at all? lol

I have no "game plan" whatsoever. I pick colors that compliment my eye color (a yellow-green)  or I'll do an opposite color to make them stand out, like a purple shade. But Ive also found that mixing up colors I wouldnt normally associate with each other, like asf said, green and purple turn out to be better than expected. Allure had an article about blue and brown together, and I tried that.

Jane has some amazing colors in individual pots that are usually no more than $3 if you wanted to try and expirament and not spend a fortune.

I say your new rule should be to have fun with it,and if it dont work out,it always washes off!!!!

I'm in a makeup rut, too. I've been wearing the same colors for a looong time. I'm a makeup junkie... I have SO much of it, but I always reach for the same old stuff. You just made me realize that I need to change it up a bit. I go for neutrals.

Eyes- Stila eye shadow in TwigTwigor if I want to go smoky I go for a Sephora steel-grey color 132 II use these as both shadow and liner.

Cheeks/face- I looooove Nars blush/bronzer duo (Orgasm and Laguna) and I can't go a day without using it Orgasm/Laguna

Lips- Stila lip glaze in peach Peach or grapefruit Grapefruit or just DuWop Lip Venom, depending on how I'm feeling.

I've been hearing more and more that brown eyes look amazing with navy blue liner. I want to try that, but I'm not good at playing with colors (hence the neutrals )

Edited to fix many spelling errors... I may have missed some, there were lots!

I don't really wear eye makeup (except for mascara) on an everyday basis but when I go out I just wear whatever I feel like (ex: I want my eyes darker, or I want a bold lip).

I have like three "looks" that I rotate, depending on what I am doing & wearing. I wear a lot more makeup at work to help me look older than the kids.

**When I am wearing black, or dark grey (which usually means I have to look "professional"):

Clinique shadow in Sweet Nothing (sheer lavender/grey), Stila shadow in Slate (brownish grey), Stila smudge-pot liner in grey: Grey, Benefit Dandelion powder, which is more of a true pink than this pic: Dandelionor Stila Bud: Bud (refill), Victorias Secret lipstick in Pretty Baby (the shade is nothing like the pic, so I won't post it, but it's a mauvey pink), and maybe some Stila watermelon gloss over it:Watermelon

**When I am wearing brownish or warm shades, but I am still dressed up:

Stila palette in Sage: (I use the lightest shade as a base, the middle one in the crease, and the dark one as a liner). and the blush, obviously, plus Clinique lipstick in Blushing Nude, which is a brownish-pink.

**When I am dressed casually at work, or on the weekends:
Nars shadow in All About EveAll About Eve(which basically looks like my eyelid, but better), with Stila Kitten on top: Kitten (refill), plus whatever blush and lipstick I feel like wearing. If I decide to line my eyes, I use Stila Espresso, which is a chocolate brown: Espresso (refill)

I do mix these up a little bit, but on most days, I am wearing one of these looks. Pretty boring, I guess.

I put on Shiseido stick foundation, some Becca concealer for my spots and undereye circles, then Stila Illuminating Powder Foundation to finish it off. I then apply Nars blush in Orgasm, line my lips with MAC lipliner in Spice and apply some form of lipgloss (today it was Philosophy Kiss Me Pink). I use a beige eyeshadow from MAC all over my lid. Sometimes I use Lancome Colour Dose in Bermuda Sunrise. Then I apply black eyeliner and apply a coat of mascara (right now it's Fresh Vital Base).

I'm in a rut too.

i'm pretty bland. i don't really wear a lot of make up (though i do buy a lot!), but i have two looks pretty much.

"going out" - nars eyeshadow duo in babylon (smoky plum base, peachy for lid), mascara, foundation from work, some loreal cream blush, mac longwear lipstick in this rosey shade.

"work" - mac shadestick in pink couture for my eyes, mascara, foundation from work, mac sheertone blush in peaches, lipstick in feel so fine and some trish mcevoy gloss

I don't really care what color clothes I'm wearing, I wear whatever make-up compliments my colorings.

On a daily basis, I don't really wear much make-up--blush, mascara, concealer, lipgloss. But if I'm going out or have something important going on, I'll wear a little more.  Usually, if it's daytime, I'll wear eyeshadows in shades of brown.  For going out, I'll have more fun--I love lavenders and purples for eyeshadow and if I'm wearing red clothing, I think it's fun to wear a shiny hot pink lipgloss with it.

I'm sorry...did I answer the question?  Probably not.

I don't think make up should match your clothes, it should compliment your skin tone and hair color.  Granted, depending on what you are wearing your make up colors could be darker or ligher.  Just play around and see what colors you like best on you.  When I'm trying to find new colors I test it out by buying really cheap make up (like wet 'n wild) then if I like it, I find it in a brand I like.
