Help me with maternity clothes!
Permalink Closed

So, I need some help on what to wear for the next few months.  I don't want to spend a ton on maternity clothes, being that I'll only wear them for 4-5 months or so, but I also need to get some cute clothes to mix and match and get by during the fall/winter.

So far, I have black pants, a black skirt, a black dress, black leggings, a grey tunic, jeans, and a denim skirt, along with a few maternity tops.

Okay, so the question is, what would you buy?

Pretty much the exact same stuff - black trousers, decent jeans, lots of leggings, one of those foldover waist maxi skirts. Pregnancy is one time I think it's acceptable to wear leggings at all times, or generally to dress like you're going to yoga.

Along with the tops I'd want some tanks to wear under husband's button-front shirts, maybe a long or wrap cardigan, plus casual/day dresses and for sure one decent out-to-dinner type dress.

New bras would have to be in the budget. If you plan to nurse I'd look for tops you can wear for a few months after birth.

I would get a dress. I'm also constantly encountering clearance maternity items on 6PM. Nice to get some good deals since you'll only be wearing maternity stuff for a [relatively] short period.

I think day dresses would be key - - but we're moving into fall.  I still think they would be easier and more comfortable, plus you can wear some of them with leggings if you want.

I agree about day dresses.  Maybe even a trip to TJ Maxx for some larger drapier dresses would be good.  Some of the Max Studio dresses tend to be cut that way.

My SIL just had a baby so I asked her what she wished that she would have budgeted for clothing during the recent pregnancy. She told me that her poor feet grew almost 2 sizes by the time the baby arrived!. She got by with mainly flip flops by the end, but she would have been out of luck if it was winter. So my advice is to put some money aside now so you can guilt-free buy a comfy pair of shoes that fit you when you are 6-7 months along.

Hi!

it seems that you're covered. For my maternity periods I only boughts bottoms, ultimately wore the jeans that went with everything & looked the best. Never bought tops at all: wore whatever I had in my closet. Accessorize: it makes the whole look: scarfs, bracelets, earrings...cute shoes. Feel well, enjoy your pregnancy!

Thanks everyone! I love this forum--you all are great. D--I'll check out 6pm.com for sure. I've been living in dresses (non-maternty) this summer, but I know that those are going to look awkward before too long, plus they're more for summer and won't work so well for fall/winter.

I had a baby 4 months ago and I lived in my jeans from Motherhood and long sleeve T-shirts. If you plan on nursing definitely plan on buying really good nursing bras. It really makes a difference. Also, if you think you might have a C-section, make sure you have the over-the-belly sweat pants because your stomach will be sore. If you need dressier blouses, Kohl's has sales all the time and some cute choices.

What I found most useful were long maternity tanks from old navy and motherhood. And my best investment by far was a BeBand from Target. Best $17 I spent my entire pregnancy, because it allowed me to wear my regular pants well into my 7th month. You can also wear this right after you give birth when your regular pants are still a little snug.
I didn't buy many maternity tops - instead I wore the above-mentioned long tanks and layered them with cardigans and blouses I already owned. I did buy a couple cute tops from Forever 21 (not maternity, I just bought a larger size).
For bottoms, I lived in foldover yoga pants. I bought a pair of designer jeans on eBay and a pair from old navy. Keep an eye on Gilt and other flash sites - I saw Rock & Republic maternity jeans and other designer brands s for as low as $30!

If you plan to nurse, ditto buying nursing bras, tanks and nursing friendly tops. I have four nursing bras, three nursing tanks, and wish I had more. It will be very important that you have nursing friendly tops because you will be nursing constantly in the beginning.

Also, don't underestimate the wardrobe you already own! I was surprised how much of my regular wardrobe I could still wear based on cut & style alone. I only spent ~$150-$200 total on maternity clothes and feel good about that. Based on what you already bought, I would say get a few tanks and you're pretty set!
