it's boot season again, and that has me wondering about skirt length vs. boot height. my question is, do you have to allow some skin to show between the top of the boot and the bottom of the skirt, or is it okay for them to "merge"?
I personally don't like them "merged". I like a good few inches of skin between the boot top and the skirt hem. I think the whole outfits looks really "heavy" when there's no skin (or tights) between the two.

I had a discussion with my mom about this over the phone (keep in mind, it'a a phone call from US to Italy-what an important topic to discuss, isn't it ?)
Well, I said I like it with a bit of skin showing (as atlgirl suggested), and I'd buy a knee-length skirt to wear with my almost knee- high boots.
She said the wat they wear them in Italy now is with a little longer skirt (mostly flared skirt), so that no skin shows. She said it looks much better. Now, while I can see how this look would be more "european", it's also true that it's heavier. I personally like both ways, so I'd say do what looks best on YOU! I guess it all depends on your proportions.
The other thing to keep in mind, is that usually when something is very "in vogue" in Europe, it gets to the States 1 or 2 years later: the cropped pants with boots look was everywere in Italy last year, and the skinny jeans tucked into boots was cited in the french Glamour last year as almost "gone" in France. So, I wouldn't be surprised if the "longer skirt with knee-high boots" look would be more frequently seen next year.
In any case, my basic rule is: I wear what I like best, and what works best on ME! hth
I usually like to have some skin between the two, but with the tall boot- chiffon dress look that people are doing right now, I think its ok for them to merge a little... the contrast in textures keeps it from looking to heavy then.
I like both. However, when the skirt falls below the top of the boot, I think it is better if the boot is more sleek and refined. I don't like a clunky boot w/ a longer skirt.

Thanks for the "Euro Style Update!" Maybe I'm just dumb, but what proportions exactly? Ahould short ppl wear it merged or seperate? It sounds obivious, merged so it's not "broken apart" but then it's heavy, which isn't goo either.

what I mean is: if you have long and thin legs, I think you can show some skin. If you are shorter and/or heavier on your legs, a flared skirt with boots that follow your calf and taper nicely at the ankle can elongate you. Smething like that. I think on me, for example, it would look better if the skirt hem merges with the boots, as my knees are really ugly (the worse part of my leg, I'd say...)
ETA: the best thing to do is anyway to try both and choose the one that looks best, I think
