hehe--we are totally on the same page w/ our financial philosophies. I would do the same thing at lunch, and have water to drink. I prefer to spend my $$ on other things besides lunches, generally! We've purchased miles tix to Europe in the past as well, otherwise we would not have been able to afford our annual 2 week overseas trip (which we have sadly discontinued since moving to the higher priced east coast and having a baby). Also, another thing we've done is quit seeing movies in the theatres. We have netflix and just rely on that for everything. Usually we can wait to see a movie until it comes out on video, and then we don't have to deal with annoying movie talkers and high priced sodas and candy. When we do go, however, we bring our own bottled water, hot tamales for me and m&ms for him!
Ha! I think I have only seen one theater movie in the past year! And it was paid for with a movie gift certificate I won 2 years ago... Although, I have discontinued sneaking homemade popcorn and faygo pop in, just because, dang it, I want the theater popcorn WITH butter! If we are going to have popcorn, we split a large as well as a large pop. BUT if we are paying for the ticket, we only go matinee
how does netflix work? and how much is it?
I have finally found my misermate

Hehe, yes you did! Yeah, if we do go we to the theatre we try to catch the matinee as well! And if we are in the mood for popcorn we will just get it there (I love the butter and always get that extra chees powdery stuff too, yum!) but usually a package of hot tamales does the trick for me. Netflix works like this: you pay a monthly fee, I think it's around $20 or $30 (my hubby signed us up for it), and they send you as many dvds as you want. You watch them, put them back in the packaging sleeve that they send and drop them in the mail, you don't have to pay postage. I think you can only have 2 or 3 at once, and then they stop sending them until you return one or more of them. You set up a qeue (sp?) of movies you want to see and they just periodically send them to your house. You don't have to request them at all, they just send you the next dvd on the list after they receive one of theirs back. It's kind of fun to see what movies appear in the mail on a given week. It saves time too, because we don't have to make any more trips up to blockbuster, etc. There are a few different companies that do this. netflix is most common but there's also walmart.com, which is cheaper but really slow and blockbuster.com, which is I think what we have now (we started out with netflix but then hubby switched for some reason). Anyway, if you get just two or three movies a month it's cheaper than going to the theatre. We always have them on hand for bad weather or whenever we're in a movie watching mood, which is usually once a week or biweekly depending on how busy we are (it's a nice thing to do on Sunday nights I think).
HTH a little. I'll be sure to keep you in mind & post whenever I discover $$-saving, miserly tips!
