So I got new pets....

The other night we were watching South Park - disturbing all in itself I realize - and there was an episode about Sea Monkeys. Well, I admitted that I didn't know what in the heck a sea monkey was - I grew up on a farm, we had cows, horses, dogs, pigs, chickens - I mean hell, did I really need a sea monkey? So my husband cried foul & we headed to Toys-R-Us and now we are raising some sea monkeys. How insane is that? Their habitat is cool - it looks like a city & has pink cars in it. I think this has to be the most ridiculous funny thing we have done in quite some time. Yes, we are sad, sad people - nerds in fact. I have always said we are just grown ups with money, we decide we want a toy & we don't even have to ask our parents!

Come on, someone fess up - do you know about these? Did you have any? Is it a nerdy boy thing? Lilykind - you are a comic book person - do they still have ads in the back to order them through the mail?

That's hilarious & cute, I can just imagine y'all running out TRU for a sea monkey tribe!

Actually this is the 1st time I learn anything about sea monkeys, so you weren't the only one.

Awww!   Post pictures!  Post pictures!  I want to see the pink cars.  I've never seen real live sea monkeys.  I remember those ads although I didn't ever read comic books.  They must have had them someplace else, too.

BTW, I love that South Park episode.  Kind of gross though.

OMG that is so funny that you guys went out and did that!!!!  Very cute, too, that your hubby wanted you to experience it.  But MAN that thing is giving me the heebie-jeebies!    It's like a cross between a scorpion, a skeleton, and a deformed booger!

That is SO funny.  I remember seeing those in the back of magazines and comic books as a kid and the little drawings of the sea monkeys always showed real monkeys swimming around and I was always a little confused by that.

Are you going to name your sea monkeys?  How many do you have?  How big do they get?  What do you feed them?  Gosh!  So many questions!!!

Ooooh...I remember those ads in the back of my brother's Boys' Life magazines! They don't run those ads in comic books anymore though. Now it's all for the same food and toys as you'd see on Nickelodeon or Cartoon Network.

Too funny!  Are these things "man-made"?  I think my friend had some before, but I never knew if they were real or not.

Here they are, sorry it's so huge, but you need to be able to see!

You can't actually see them yet. Well, you can see sand looking things, which are apparently them, but I think they look like grains of sand, so it was kind of anti-climatic. But they supposedly get a little bigger & there are areas on the lid that are magnified, so I guess we'll see them in a week or so? I hope, anyway!

They are scary looking. As disturbing as it is, the SouthPark episode showed some of best pictures we have seen. But NCShopper, I know what you mean about the pictures of them, and no, unfortunately they don't play tennis or build their own castles or anything cool like they show in those ads!

We named them collectively "Nimrod" - that is the name of the critter we like in that new show Surface. There are supposedly hundreds of them in there - but I find that hard to believe. Not sure how big they get - but I'm hoping eventually I'll be able to see them with my naked eye! So not big I guess is the answer to that. And the kit came with "growth food" - it is in a packet about as big as a small makeup sample, and that apparently will feed them for a long time. The instructions say specifically not to overfeed them - that it's better to have skinny healthy sea monkeys than plumps ones in a coma.. It really says that - so funny!

theotherjess - they are not man made, apparently they are a form of brine shrimp? Whatever that is? I'm just kind of confused about the fact that you pour a little powder in water & create an animal - kind of scary. I guess it's like a cool science experiment?

Aww, guys, thanks for caring - I think the whole thing is funny & had to share - I mean really, SEA MONKEYS!

I love your little sea monkey house!! It's too cool. I never heard of sea monkeys until one of those 80s shows on VH1. But hey, if they don't creep you out, go for it!

And I think it's awesome that you and the hubby hauled off to Toys 'R Us in search of them. Very cool.

That tank is adorable.  I can't wait to see pictures of them when they get bigger.

Wow,

I had seamonkeys when i was a kid. You could buy the kit at Spencer's gifts. So the kit is from Toys-R-US?  My stepdaughter would love this.  This might solve the " I want a tortoise craving" she is currently obsessed with. Something different everyweek with kids.

Yes, from TRU & it was $10 - so a cheap alternative to a tortoise! They also had a moon & something else I thought was not interesting after I saw the city....

How funny! I remember the ads in the back of magazines and always wanted to get some but never did. I'm interested in "seeing" what happens!

ahhhhhhh! My friend and I got sea monkeys in grade 9. This was a looooooong time ago. Hmmmmmm, about 20 years ago. Gaaaahhhhhhh. Are you 14 in grade 9? Anyhoo, we loved them, even though they were brine shrimp and they didn't have little bows in their hair.

Brine shrimp are also used as fish food. Some aquarium fish love brine shrimp. Pure protein that moves!(so there is some sport involved for the fish). We actually have a can of brine shrimp eggs here......so you soak them for awhile and then put them in salt water and maintain the proper temp, etc, and there should be some hatching in 24 hours(approx). Do these instructions sound familiar, laken1 ??

I think it is very cool that you and your husband went out and got Sea Monkeys. You
are only young once but you can be immature forever!! These are words to live by, my friend!!

FYI, brine shrimp are very high in omega-3 fatty acids.
