OMG. I read an article on the nytimes website and her letters were definitely cringeworthy. She sounds like a silly high school girl writing a fan letter to her celebrity crush....

i just read through the first link, didn't read the wonkette piece. i dunno, those letters don't seem that bad or creepy to me. i think she's just a person who knows which side her bread is buttered on.

i am sure she is legitimately a fan of GW and Laura, but it looks like she was hoping to hitch her wagon to his rising star from a long while ago. there's a reason people keep in touch with handwritten correspondence and trump up reasons to send those notes to people in positions of power. it makes sense to do it if you want to keep your name in the forefront of that person's mind, if they can be useful to you down the road.

sorry, there are so many mixed metaphors in there but i can't be bothered to go back and edit.

and what of the public scatology from GW that he mentions? gross!

This is exactly what I thought too. I mean, "you're the best governor ever!" is embarrassingly juvenile for a woman of her age and position, but other than that I didn't see anything objectionable in the rest of it.

I agree too. Regardless of whether or not she is qualified, the way she's written to him is basically the way this kind of game is played in politics. She's complimenting someone in a position of power, and this happens with anyone in a position of power, in politcs, business, or any kind of job with authority over others. I didn't think she sounded that bad.

But seriously, I think it shows a sort of weird adulation of W and Laura (the part about hoping their daughters think they're as "cool" as she does?) and political naivete. It's just the repeated "you're the greatest" and "texas is blessed" and all that crap... Actually, it makes me sort of sad. I think Harriett is lonely.

But I can see how others might not find it so odd. I still find it ooky.

But it kind of just sounds like typical syrupy Texan talk to me. Plenty of older Southern gentlemen write kind of syrupy too, I recall chuckling at one of my companies 70ish retired clients, he had been an attorney in West Texas, and his letters to unknowns used some similar grandiose language. He preferrred writing letters of instruction addressed to "Ladies and Gentlemen" of whatever security company, over filling out forms to submit his annual FIT. It was nice that he liked to be personal, but it was also tough to get to the point!

Ok, one more thing and I'll shut up. Political talk and kissing-up aside, this is a nominee to our supreme court. NOT a politician. The person is not supposed to be a political ass-kisser (and should be able to write quite well, which she really can't if you have seen some of her stuff). So I think that's what's weird & wrong here. This is not a political appointment. This is a lifetime on our nation's most prestigious and (hopefully) distinguished court. And that woman is a hair's breadth from dotting her i's with hearts.

I agree with dc. Miers is not the kind of a communicator I personally find ideal for supreme court. I was just pointing out that this kind of language is not so uncommon to certain old southerners. I get the feeling Miers won't be confirmed for other reasons, but I do hope that O'Connor's replacement is female in the end.
