Anyone do spin classes?

How do you like it? Does it make your butt hurt? How long until your butt didn't hurt anymore?

I take spin classes and really like them.  I go through phases with my favorite workouts, so now I am taking spin twice a week along with some sports conditioning, lifting etc.  It took about two weeks before my butt didn't hurt from moving around on the seat (I assume you are talking about that soreness not a muscular soreness?).  Let me know if you have any other questions.  HTH

mckenke - your spinning bikes have seats?!?  I've never taken a class before because the bikes at our gym don't have seats!

well, i went and i liked it a lot. at 9am this morning. I got some padded biker shorts last night at Dicks with a 20% off coupon. It was a beginner class but it was fun and a good workout. Butt hurt at first on the seat but feels okay right now. (love the padded shorts!!)

LMonet you mean they don't have any seats at all or ones without covers?  I have never heard of there not being seats.  I know you can buy padded seat covers or wear the padded shorts.  I haven't done either, but I have found after a couple of sessions it doesn't really bother me.

Mikacat glad you liked your class.  It's a great workout.  I wear a heartrate monitor sometimes and spin classes always get my heart rate really high.  One suggestion for the uncomfortability of the seat is to make sure your bike is set up right.  Make sure your but is on the widest part of the seat and you are sitting back on the bike.

No seats.  Nada.  Just a metal rod where the seat used to be attached!

That is really weird...it did make me laugh though.  I have never encountered that (and I have belonged to many gyms), maybe they bring in the seats for the class??

I've viewed classes in progress ... we asked about it and they said it was so you couldn't sit down!  Bunch o' freaks!

spinning is a great workout and i'm happy that you liked your class mikacat.  i used to run but it became hard on my knees, and spinning is the only other activity i've found that brings my heart rate up as high as it can be and makes me sweat as much as i would from running.

i also wear padded shorts, although i agree with mckenke that it will go away after a few classes.

and i've never seen a spinning bike without a seat...sounds kinda weird to me, especially since the most challenging part of spinning is actually riding while staying seated with the resistence at a high level.

I've never taken a class so I can't comment, except to say that this sounds....dangerous. And more than just a little - I mean OUCH.

Spinning classes are SOOOOOOOOOOO great!  I used to take them all the time and they'd kick my ass!  I'd be so tired afterwards and I'd sleep so well.

As far as the butt soreness goes, I found the best way to avoid it is to hover over the seat as often as possible, instead of actually sitting on it.  It gives your legs and butt a better workout and you end up less sore afterwards.  Of course you can always sit on the seat if your legs get worn out, but after a few workouts you probably won't feel the need to.

This thread has inspired me to do a spinning orientation on Saturday

I do know we have seats at my gym.  I don't think I'd do it otherwise!!

do it alikat---i think you might like it. Let us know if you do.

I didn't realize they were so many positions on the bike, and different tensions, climbing, standing, etc. and our instruction uses great music and turns the lights off some and uses black lights and everything glows in the dark.

LMonet, are you sure they don't have seats in a bin in the back, so people can choose a seat before the class begins? I once went to a place where they did this. There are several types of seats, so the gym would just let people pick which one they wanted.

I agree, it sounds dangerous sans seats though.

On that note, your butt will hurt, but the endorphin release from it is akin to running for me.
